Worth, Harry [real name Harry Bourlon Illingsworth] (1917-1989), comedian, was born at 47 Fitzwilliam Street, Hoyland Common, Yorkshire, on 20 November 1917, the last of eleven children of Charles Henry Illingsworth (1870-1918) and his wife, Alice Jane, nee Crick (1874-1953). He was one of only six siblings who survived to adulthood. His father, a coal miner, was killed in a pit accident when Harry was just six months old, after which his mother took in washing and cooked to make ends meet. When he was eleven the family moved to Tankersley. While at school Harry entertained friends with his magic lantern, and a visiting ventriloquist convinced him that his future lay in show business. He left school at fourteen and went down the mines at the Wharncliffe Silkstone colliery, but he persisted in his ambitions to be an entertainer, perfecting a ventriloquist act. In 1938, following success in a series of amateur concerts, he turned professional, touring the local working men's clubs.... ...
