OK so you are going to stretford in west manchester heading down the A1 about to join the M62 and it says its closed at J12 does it affect your journey - yes or no without looking it up
Without looking it up id say that j12 would be round about the western m60 m62 intersection so possibly it would be
The M3 and M4 are numbered East to West, with Jct 1 being at London. The M2 is numbered West to East, with Jct 1 being at London. The M180 is West to East with Jct 1 outside Doncaster, as is the M62 from Liverpool. The M1 is South to North, while the M5 is North to South and the M6 is South to North. The point is, unless you know the motorway network then the information given is next to useless. And the A roads are even worse. We might know that the A628 closed at A616 means that the road over Woodhead is closed at Flouch, but most people outside Barnsley wouldn't have the foggiest what that means. If the signs said A628 closed to Manchester divert via M62 then it would make a lot more sense to motorists.
Well you have a better knowledge of motorway numbers than I have. and I suspect 95% of the rest of the population. I had no idea where J12 on the M62 was until I looked it up and you somehow knew it was the M60/M62 intersection I dont know whether to be impressed or just think you are quite sad
I am afraid I knew that as well but then I know I am sad. I do the motorway network a lot and know the numbering on many of them but I understand the point you are making perfectly - most people don't. I am sad enough to know where most of the services are around the country, which ones are bearable and which ones are horrible. Because I have stopped in most of them.
I dunno which direction the junctions run on the m62, but if it says closed jct12-14 that means it'll be closed at 12 and open again from 14 otherwise it would say closed jct 14-12 going the opposite way. Not quite sure what you mean by closing it before you get off? Like as in just close it half way down the motorway without being able to get off at a junction??
Somewhere along the way common sense has to come into effect, it's like drivers want every single piece of information force fed to them, yet signs that are in place most people just completely ignore anyway then play dumb
It doesn't matter which way you are going - I've only ever seen it listed as closed with the lowest - highest. So on the A1 it will say M62 closed J12-14 and on the M60 or M56 it will also say M62 closed J12-14. The M62 is probably a bad example as it is too close and a lot of people on here know the road. Earlier this season, we played at Brizzle. If you were on the M42 and saw signs saying M5 closed J16-17, would you know where that is or whether it will affect you. If you knew that was the M4 junction you might divert off earlier to avoid the tailbacks, but you might not realise until its too late.
Tbf I wouldn't take too much notice because there will be a diversion in place wherever any road closures are anyway. Only thing that really annoys me is when they put the 60mph on the gantries everyday up until about 6pm for absolutely no reason whatsoever
I'm going to be honest and say I wouldn't have a clue!! I know the route from Leeds to Barnsley (and back) and that's it. I do no motorway driving to get to my job and so apart from once to Skeggy, once to Blackpool and once to Glasgow, I haven't driven on a motorway to anywhere else. Even though I've been to those places I have no recollection of the routes now. I take my satnav in my bag with me whenever I drive anywhere, even routes I know well, just in case a route is closed and the diversions are rubbish or non-existent. People doing the roadworks in Leeds love putting up really helpful signs that say 'Road closed. Please find alternative route'.
The problem is that the Highways agency close long stretches of motorways when only small sections are being worked on. Fair enough up to a point when widening or resurfacing but, for example, central barrier replacement or line marking, here in Italy and most places in Europe they use a lorry with a stonking great girder on the back and huge LED arrow which you can see from miles away in conjunction with gantry warnings miles back. This protects the workers and the lorry moves with the road works so only a very short section is 'closed at a time' In other incidents the Highways agency and Police almost seem to take pride in how long they can keep a motorway shut! The recent 'suspicious package' where the M1 was closed for most of the day is an example. Once the fact it was not an explosive device was determined, a few photos and measurements, They could have removed the object (looked like a plastic bin liner full of rubbish on the pictures) a safe distance from the motorway to carry out further investigations Admittedly the traffic density on most Autostradas and French motorways (particularly toll ones) is lower but they do also seem to clear the road after incidents far quicker than the UK authorities who seem to make such a meal of everything.
