Cheap train tickets available online for Brentford (Saturday 16th December) and Fulham (Saturday 23rd December). You can get them for as cheap as £28 return without any discounts at the moment. If there's 3 or more of you travelling then if you book your tickets at the same time you get 25% off, making it £21 each (as long as you book at www.virgintrainseastcoast.com). If you have a railcard you can get 1/3 off, making it £18.50 for a return. As it gets closer to the date of travel, the fares get more expensive, so if you want the cheapest tickets then book them now. Should also specify that this is from Doncaster to King's Cross. If you want to go from Barnsley then book your tickets from Doncaster now and buy a ticket from Barnsley to Doncaster on the day.
Booked ours £56 for two adults two kids on family railcard.... Got Norwich for £57 Bolton for £22 and tomorrow for £58! I like to keep on the ball and book in advance to keep the prices reasonable. My mate who supports man city has given up on away games after 30 odd years travelling the country following them because of all the kick off changes meaning his tickets are no good.
Looked for Norwich on train and it was coming up 4 hours plus by train as no trains stopping at Peterborough that day
Were going donny-peterborough then peterborough-Norwich....split tickets Not had anything saying that there are problems at peterborough.
The 09-19 Doncaster to kings cross train is coming up as change at Newark , and then bus to Peterborough
0818 I think. Direct to Peterborough. I avoid any trains with multiple stops where I can. Don't bother getting the 0919 as you'll not see Norwich until half one at the earliest regardless of the bus. Either get the earlier one or go via Sheffield direct.
Is it a lot more expensive to go from Sheffield? It's so much easier to get from Barnsley to Sheffield and the same coming back.
Yes it is unfortunately. East Midlands Trains have good walk-up ticket prices but finding a cheap advance with them is very difficult - there's no cheap ones left for Brentford or Fulham. However, think of it this way. It takes 20-30 minutes to get from Barnsley to Sheffield on the train, and from Sheffield to London the very quickest you can do is it 2 hours 1 minute; it often takes around 2h15. Whereas with Doncaster it takes 50-60 minutes to get there from Barnsley on the train, and the average journey time is ~1h45, with the quickest being 1h30 (and funnily enough that's also often the cheapest). So the time you lose in getting to Doncaster is almost certainly going to be negated by the speediness of the East Coast from Doncaster to London compared to the relative sluggishness of the Midland route from Sheffield to London. And it's quite a bit cheaper a lot of the time.
Thanks for that a few of is thinking of going down on the train but non of is know anything about trains so that's a big help. So you saying just buy the Donny to London part of the ticket now the Barnsley to Donny bit on the day?
Yep exactly that mate. If you buy a couple of months before i.e. now then you'll be able to get a good deal. And make sure you book on www.virgintrainseastcoast.com to get the 25% off if there's 3 or more of you.
Depending on your age and/or the people you travel with get a railcard. Thirty quid for the year but it's a further third off. Ours paid for themselves first time out.
