How long is your commute to work and would you be willing to increase it? Currently work in Sheff and considering a job in Nottingham. Not sure if it's viable though.
1 hour to work in rush hour, 45 non rush hour. Moved a bit further out to get the house I wanted, wouldn’t want to commute any further than I do.
Speaking from experience, live where you work otherwise the commute will just wear you down and all the benefits of living at home are eradicated.
Right take this how you want I work in leeds its a,25 min commute I have a colleague who commute s from nottingham daily and has done for 7 years It depends on the economics if you are going contracting and getting circa £350 a day definitely permie, you probably well it depends on what the salary was and how much a increase that delivered So in short it would depend on the circumstances
90 mins right now. Less than an hour next year when I drive. Not great. But my last job was 10 mins away and I hated it. Swings and roundabouts innit.
I took a 70% pay cut and added 40mins on my journey! I've realised that as long as I've got enough money to cover the necessities, my happiness comes before any amount of extra money.
I could get a ~20% pay rise to work in Leeds, but I reckon the two hours a day sat in the car and the parking cost would wipe that out fairly quickly. The train would be better - at least then I could do something constructive instead of trying not to crash. Saying that, I've worked from home most of this year and my commute somehow seems to involve a 15 mile round trip to Barnsley to drop Jr off.
I hear what you’re saying Tyrone but after a 15 hour day? (12 hours a day + commute if he’s a proper contractor) he ain’t got much of a life once he gets home
Sheffield to Nottingham is an absolutely dreadful drive at rush hour. Ended up commuting between the cities quite regularly about 15 years back and it was horrendous. Some days I spent 75 minutes on the M1 each way and I can’t imagine it's any better now. I would also add that having lived in both cities, I loved Sheffield and would jump at the chance to return there under the right circumstances. As for Nottingham, if I never set foot there again I wouldn't give a flying fck. Absolutely hated living there, but I was quite skint and it's a much more expensive city than Sheffield. Maybe I'd have quite enjoyed it with a bit of coin. Edit - having re-read your initial post, I had thought you lived in Sheffield, but I'm now assuming that you live in Barnsley. If so, unless you could work on a flexible timetable which allowed you to commute on non-peak times, I'd be very wary about taking a job in Nottingham. Even if you live in Sheffield it's pushing it.
Work from home most days so about 30 seconds from my bedroom to my office. Most I ever did was 90 minutes. I hated it but read a lot of books. Swings and roundabouts.
No im amazed he has lasted that long . Particularly when you consider the implications of ir35 I guess hw must be on a ridiculous rate
It should be just over an hour each way, but as I'm hostage to the vagaries of South West Trains, it rarely is, and I usually have to stand up. I try to work at home one day a week to compensate for this. I don't know if your new job would permit that.
I work from home but I do go over to the office once a week which is an hour away. It's not too bad but it can get boring at times, particularly in winter. I'm glad I no longer need to do it more than once per week.
