Managed to get some brief game time against us yesterday. Seems very much as though their fans are divided on his capabilities with one saying " The guys a joke, he offers and delivers nothing" whilst another enquires " Is he an inside forward, winger, tea lady.? He has no identity at all." He's on better wages at Norwich, but professional footballers thrive on playing and like Winnall and Bree might in time start to reflect on their decision to leave the Reds.!
Marley Watkins is similar to quite a few others that have left for grasses greener. Barnsley fc was the right place at the right time, with the right TEAM MATES and manager. Watkins was part of something good. A collective of players that were all pulling in the right direction. Revered and respected by all, on and off the field. When you look past the wage increase, you are starting anew at a club and have to prove yourself all over again, but not only to the fans but also your manager and team mates. Just being good at one club isn't a ticket for continued success, as some of these lads are finding. We're doing OK without them.
I spoke to Marley pitchside before the game and he isn't very happy. He said they don't play to his style.
I was pretty disappointed that we couldn’t keep hold of Watkins - same with Scowen. Good players but should’ve stayed with us really. We had a good thing going and they all left for more money - I think we could all have predicted Watkins struggling to make an impression there!
When he went he said quite clearly that he loved it at Oakwell and only left reluctantly for the money. It's a sad fact of life in the money making machine non-sport that we call football....
I liked Marley. Decent player. Excellent work ethic. Terrible career move. A lot of these lads sorry, all of these lads leave for the money, which is totally understandable but a sad endichtment to the modern game. Same for Ashley Fletcher today. Problem is that their careers will all stall as players need to play to develop. Shame really. Having said that it’s worked out for Scowen Hourihane and Mawson.
I think that adds even more credibility to our recruitment policy and the fact that despite the vagaries of any single players style of play, Hecky is able to blend all manner of individual styles into a viable unit which in the words of the Norwich journalist at yesterday's game, is able to play with tempo, verve and desire. Quite clearly, from comments from their local press and their fans, the Norwich boss Farke doesn't appear to have that ability. As a result, Marley is probably destined not to get much game time which will in the long run also harm his international ambitions.!
Problem with fletcher is the amount Middlesborough have paid for him and probably the wage he'll be on. If it doesn't work out it'll be hard to move him on if he doesn't want to take a lower wage.
Yep agreed - I really rated Scowen massively. Was gutted when we didn’t get him to sign up again as I felt it was realistic we could get him. Hourihane and Mawson are class apart. Hourihane definitely capable of playing in the premier league
Yep agreed - they paid way over the odds for him. A lad with a lot of potential but not worth even close to 7m and lord knows what they’re paying him each week.
Agreed - we need to find a way to keep these lads so that we can push on to the next level. It’s not impossible.
