Another example of the blatant disregard shown by motorists towards cyclists.

    Best wishes to the victim.

No excuse not to stop after an accident.

Speaks volumes. I'd bang another five years on his sentence.

Driving off after an accident could be a result of fear, panic or other emotions taking over on the spur of the moment. If he got home then handed himself in shortly after that is completely different to driving off and trying to avoid the consequences. I do know at least one person that got away with drink driving by getting home and having a drink straight away.

So it depends on the exact circumstances of his behaviour, but if the driver drove off and didn't report the crash but was arrested following an investigation, then yes he should have a longer sentence. If he handed himself in shortly afterwards it should be taken into account, but not necessarily punished with a longer prison sentence for it - although a longer driving ban, bigger fine or other deterrent could come into play.

Even if the cyclist dies, if he admits to the charge the driver would be unlikely to see such a lengthy sentence. I was involved* in a fatal RTC case with some dreadful circumstances and even then the driver was only given a 7 year sentence.

    * I gave evidence in court during the trial.

    Lots of heresay and hypothosising.

Until the actual circumstances are known shouldnt be going off half cocked.

Far too many what ifs at this moment which gets no one anywhere.

I know the sentences are laughable - I should have said in an ideal world I'd give him an extra five years.

Without knowing any of the circumstances involved I think it's a bit premature to make such a statement.

Somebody hit a cyclist then didn't even stop to make sure they were OK or see if there was anything they could do. I'm honestly racking my brains to see if I can come up with a legitimate reason why they'd do that which wouldn't paint them in a bad light, but can't. Open to suggestions though.

Didn't know they had hit him? Who knows I'm not saying that is the case but you have next to no information so wait and see.
