In his defence he raced back to our penalty area when he gave the ball away from the corner which wasn't a bad sprint to say he was dead on his feet. And his positioning at corners is down to team tactics. I didn't notice Heckingbottom telling him to get in the box instead of going short.
We signed Thiam on 11th August...and I'm chuffed to bits we did. Mamadou has shown signs of improvement with every game he's played and looks a great prospect for the 2nd half of the season. I appreciate his match fitness isn't where it needs to be at the moment but feel he's now at the level where he needs the game time & should be in the starting line-up from now on. There are a lot of positive comments on his performance today & I agree we all need to give the team our full support.
In Thiam's defence, he was our best player by a country mile yesterday. He might not be physically up to the English game just yet, but at least he's going in the right direction which is more than what can be said about the majority of the remaining squad.
Is he refusing to enter the penalty area? Or have we been working on short corners on the training ground because we don't have anywhere near enough presence in the penalty area to do anything with a traditional corner. I get the feeling that Thiam going out wide to offer the short option is something he's being asked to do. The short corners aren't working either, the balls that eventually come across are, it seems, intended to be rolled along the 18 for someone to strike, however that definitely didn't work yesterday. Maybe Thiam should be drilling them towards the back stick. After all, shot power is one thing he does seem to have in his arsenal.
I don’t think he’s overweight, just unfit. It makes me wonder if he’s living right? In terms of his diet & meal times. It wouldn’t be a shock if he’s eating **** like ready meals, takeaways, fast food etc. Young lad moving away from his family for the first time. Can he even cook? I remember watching a video of Moncur & Lee last season just after they signed & both of them admitted they could barely cook & eat pot noodles & beans on toast & them 2 were the most unfit in the squad.
Around a million spent on a striker to take our corners, instead of being on the end of them. It's like when Woy would have Harry Kane take the England corners. It doesn't make sense.
Same with Kane...... http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/...on-harry-kane-euro-2016-corners-a8037171.html
I want to see the outfield player most suited to taking the set pieces doing exactly that. I couldn’t care less what position the player occupies provided that the delivery is good. We’ve been far too wasteful this season from dead ball situations with deliveries failing to beat the first man, going straight into the keeper’s arms or sailing out of play. In order for someone, Thiam, anyone, to get on the end of the set piece the delivery has to be right at the moment it certainly isn’t.
Thing is, Thiam wasn't usually taking the corners, he was stood there as an option for the short corner. Anyway, my original comment about him not being in the box for corners was throwaway, an overemphasis meant as a joke. It wasn't what worried me about his poisoning. What did, and has done whenever I've seen him play, is his tendency to drift out to the wing during open play. The short corner routine is undoubtedly worked on in training (although it really didn't work), but I'd be surprised if Hecky wants his centre forward stuck out wide so often when we're attacking. I thought we would have performed much better had we stuck Potts up top and Thiam on the wing. Thiam could play where he naturally gravitates towards anyway and Potts, who is anonymous every time we've stuck him on the wing (still can't think of a good reason why Hecky does that), could use his size to cause central defenders problems and gives us a presence up front. Not that I think that's ideal, but once the team had been picked I think it would have worked better.
