Not seen this for years. Memories of my first full season as a Barnsley fan. That was a crazy night. Watched from the West Terrace, which was unbelievably packed. Just remember as a small 12 year old, being protected by fellow fans. What a great time to be a Barnsley fan, and what a team that was. Thanks for posting.
Very rare to see us on Sportsnight - where did you get the clip from? Wouldn't mind a copy. I was just behind the away manager's dugout in the West Stand
Never seen the full length highlights other than when I was allowed to stay up to watch the highlights on Sportsnight. My Dad said he was in the ground for 6pm and it was rammed then. This is what football was al about. Its changed, and not for the better.
Remember coming home from the match and watching it on sportsnight. For me the period between 78-84 ish was the best ever: intoxicating stuff.
Great watch. Rarely catch the older stuff but really enjoyed that. What a great team we had then. Refreshed views on heroes such as Aylott, Evans, Joyce and Gavin. Things that caught my eye were: McCarthy only 22, Banks only 19 and what a great player, fans fenced in only at the Kop end, passing back to the keeper, some of the chants ( Barnsley aggro and You’re gonna get you f....heads kicked in very loud), 34,000, speed of Barraclough, keepers always kicking long!!
Wonderful stuff... thank you very much !! They should make our current crop watch that to see what is possible if you have belief and desire.
I was a little younger than you - maybe 10 or 11. I can remember queuing up outside the Ponty for tickets with my mate and our dads and I saw someone drop a fiver and nobody believed me but it ended up paying most (if not all) of me and my mates tickets. I can't remember much of the actual game except the crush when we scored.
Was there. Had forgot it was televised. Was 17 at the time... how time flies I must have a programme in my lock up from the game. Thanks Kendray
I started watching us in 1985 so missed out on this team. You read about them and hear what people say and this squad, these players almost become mythical and you think were they really that good? Those of us who never saw them wonder if it’s true and then you see footage like this, what a side and they are MY team. I’m over the moon you all like the vids... there’s more to come!
Drove all the way from Cambridge and back for that game, had a City fan with me, I didn't give him too hard a time though....
A great night . When walking down to Oakwell (not late) I thought where is everybody ? Answer ! All inside even though bfc fans have a reputation for arriving late . I finished up hanging from the fence to the right of the pony end . I then went to a town centre pub to watch the highlights . I remember Jimmy Hill being quite scathing about our play/tactics as if we were a rough second tier side . Not my view of the game . Anybody else remember this ?
Brilliant night can remember it well. What a team we had back then when footballers were men or you got hurt 110%commitment to the shirt thanks for posting and making an old Red very happy.Merry Christmas
