You would have thought that the club would have wanted to keep him as Aidy White was injury prone . If I remember right Williams was the only ommission from jpt final team to play the following game against Chesterfeeled . Bree played and was very poor , replaced by Williams who improved the defence immeasurably . So the question is who decided to let him go ? Board or coach ?
It was touted at the time by the club that Williams was given a time frame in order to make a decision on his future and he missed it. His dad who was posting on here at the time said George had been informed that his chances would be limited and the wage that they offered him was the most they could without having to wait for compo. And George only requested £50 more a week on top of that (supposedly still only £1100 ish a week). Who knows really.
Yeah we had White and Yiadom, but people were still a bit surprised when George was allowed to leave. I certainly was. The wisdom of that decision was also questioned when White got injured as well.
Statistical analysis indicated that he would not be affective at Championship level so the wage increase he desired was not sanctioned
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not anti-Williams and I certainly appreciate the role that he played in the promotion campaign but I do think that people are being rather sentimental here. If Williams had signed a new deal then he would’ve been a squad player, PH said himself that he couldn’t guarantee Williams first team football and that in his opinion he would struggle for game time. I also think it’s absolutely bonkers to suggest that Williams would be in the current matchday squad/first XI when everyone’s fit and available as imho he’d be behind Yiadom, Cavaré and McCarthy on the right hand side and behind Yiadom and Fryers on the left hand side. Heart ruling head for some on here, I think.
I think when he was here he was a far better full back than fryers has been so far, far better than white was when he was here, far better than Bree. Not sure why he became the squad player he should have been in the running for player of the year
Seriously? White and Hammill on the left hand side is one of the best full back/winger partnerships I’ve seen at Oakwell in a long time. Williams was incredibly limited in terms of his technical ability/suitability but he had passion and gave his all. He was very much like Neil Austin in that respect.
Im not sure about Yiadom leaving now. Swansea have a different manager, and that's only until the end of season, and both them and West Brom could both be relegated. We may be able to offer him a more acceptable deal to stay on.
If we do keep him I hope we can get him to sign a new contract, not just leave in the summer. Would be like a new signing if we did. I'm sure he'd push on & if we did sell him in the summer we'd get some proper coin.
Williams wouldn’t be in our team this year, but would have been in there last year ahead of Jones and Elder. Obviously with White being injured too he’d have got more game time. I’d have kept George Smith on too, for the record. Better than the two I just mentioned.
Agreed. Others might not agree but I think he's a really good player and should be one of the players we should be building the team around and using for a benchmark in quality. We've got half a decent team, just need to add to it for me.

I’m not talking about when he left the club. My comment was in response to those saying he would’ve been in the matchday squad/first XI and is better than X, Y and Z.
