New transfer policy? The motto is still younger better cheaper. What will change is when we get good players, might be able to keep them or at least get a proper fee as opposed to selling so we don't lose for a free. Chris Iwelumo praises Hecky for job he's doing. Asking whether he wants to get players to stop looking at us as a stepping stone? It's a balancing act. Get pitched a lot of players from all over because they are going to get an opportunity at Barnsley. Not what Hecky wants to be about. Wants us to stop pitching as a selling club. Had arguments in the summer about it. Wants to build a successful team and challenge with everyone in the league. How does it feel with new owners at minute. Do they have a new way of doing things? Trick is to bring numbers and data to life. Need to assess what every player is bringing to squad. Have to he clever in recruitment, best players on our budget. Assessing player profiles before making approaches. Are you looking to try control fans ambitions and imagination what with new investment? Some of the names were linked with 9n twitter etc is laughable. More money going to come from commercial side etc. Commenting on 4th clean sheet in 6? Long process since start of season, 17 new players from loads of leagues. Signed too many attacking players in the summer. Had to work hard on players like that off the ball. Had to sign defensively minded players on loan because of it, Williams Gardner. Asking Hecky about speculation with Him. He's got used to it. Lots of players courted, 7 transfer requests last January. Gets linked with jobs, could be a distraction, not Hecky but everyone else. Focus everyone on task in hand. Identity of club. How difficult is it to keep that when recruiting players? Trying to get back to signing 0layers with different qualities and weaknesses. Too many players atm with same strengths and weaknesses. That's the gist anyway.
Good interview that. Hecky speaks so much sense. First time I’ve heard him actually say 7 players wanted to leave last January. Wonder if it was more than just Marley that out an official transfer request in.
He sort of said it in a jokey way. It was something like, "its been different this year, we had about 7 transfer requests handed in last January". I was typing as he spoke so I've probably not got the context right. He could have been exaggerating.
ah, fair enough. Thanks for posting, regardless. I guess you could potentially put Scowen and Watkins on that list too, since they both rejected new contracts.
Elliott Lee may have been another, and Townsend wanting game time, loan request? Thanks for the summary!
Roberts was one, came close to moving to Hull. Know that for a fact. Hull couldn't stump up the money in time and the deal fell through at last minute.
Not quite a transfer request with us but didn't Morsy request to go back to Wigan to sign a new contract?
Regardless of possible exaggeration, I find it quite sad and a little insulting that a good number of players seemed so keen to leave what appeared to be a really special club last January. Career ambitions acknowledged, the sheer eagerness to move from our club just simply to get more money and play for a 'big club' saddens me a little.
Yes. The unrest in January was unreal. Arguments amongst friends, divides in the camp etc. Roberts, Winnall, Hourihane and bree all handed in TR within a week of the market opening. The club was 100% right to let the players who left go.
Footballers are all in it for themselves. Sam Winnall took the full brunt of it (rightly so due to his agent releasing the photo when they did) but I’m sure he wasn’t the only one pushing hard for a move. Because Scowens Dad, Roberts Mum and George Williams Dad (season before) all claimed their sons “loved it”, “didn’t want much more money”, “wanted to stay” etc we eat it up and think that the club ‘ballsed it up’. Reality may very well be different. I don’t know. If my son ever played professional football I would probably tell him to “manage” his exit and not burn any bridges, make it the clubs fault etc. Scowen, Watkins, Winnall, Hourihane, Roberts - as much as I like them - had zero loyalty to this club when it was a choice of money over Barnsley FC. I doubt any player we sign will either. John Stones - he signed a new contract when he knew clubs wanted to sign him via tribunal. Very few players can say they consider the impact of the club on their actions.
