I'm not sure I can call myself a younger fan, I was slightly over a month short of my tenth birthday when we beat Bradford, I should be spoiled but I realise looking back just how unique of a time that was, and how lucky I was to experience it. A quick glance at some of the teams we played that season - Port Vale, Grimsby, Tranmere, illustrates where we could have ended up. Moreover, some of my best memories are of watching us in the lower leagues. Huddersfield away, the amazing 2016 run. I wouldn't have traded those for anything. Some people just have a sense of entitlement.

I remember taking a young first time fan to Stockport where we lost 2-1, and him saying I wish we were as good as Stockport, I looked at my mate and said shows how low we have sunk. Year later Clarke became manager the rest is history

I have read this post half a dozen time & still cannot make head nor tail of it , can you please translate , for a start , we did not have a team at the turn of the 19 th century , football had not been invented then , & the worst period in our history you say , well that time I referred to was from the sixties to 1980 & it was a long period of time , surely I should be able to comment on my time watching the reds & not just cherry pick the good times & from 1980 to now is not 60 years & could you please explain what you mean by saying I was dirt when I was 5 ? I do not understand your point

I think he means "if you were brought up on poor quality food, that doesn't mean you should accept poor quality food today".

No I definitely mean the start of the 20th century when we won the FA cup and got to the final in another year too.

My point was that kids literally eat dirt as children. Just like how we were crap in the 69s when some people were just starting out. To compare everything in your adult life to the low points as a kid is a bit daft.

We might have sold all our best players but it doesn't matter if we sleep walk to league 1 because compared to my worst experience of watching us in the 60s it's great.

This meal I paid £200 for is a bit bland and not as good as it should be but compared to the dirt I ate as a child it's great.

By the way I was trying to explain what Conan was getting at and wasn't talking about you

I sort of get what you are trying to say but what you should understand is that despite the ups & downs over the years , I have never not enjoyed going to watch the reds , being a supporter to me , means you take the rough with the smooth & when I get to the point that I no longer get the buzz on a saturday afternoon , I will stop going & do something else with my time but until that day comes whether we are in the Premier league or the Conference , I will be taking my seat at Oakwell

We always lost to Chessy in those days. And Halifax.

I remember a 3rd division game against Rotherham in the early 70s when people used to swap ends at half time so you could be behind the goal your team were attacking. A lot of my school-mates were Rotherham fans and we stood and chatted in the Brewery stand on half way before continuing to the other end.

Its true what you say , but when we used to go to Millmoor , it was a nightmare , you were in the away end for the whole match & then had to run the gauntlet on your way out , there was only one way , along the alley, which was not an enjoyable experience

I got quite crushed in there after the 4-2 win 1981/2. Frightening experience.

I don’t understand how you can say all this but then refuse to get a season ticket at Oakwell and consider getting on at Bradford instead?

Being of the same era I think the biggest difference now is the amount of useless info knocking around. In the olden days you just went to the match, watched a nil nil draw and went home. Great stuff. I never knew or cared who owned the club or was that bothered about the manager. It was all about the players.

Not sure how old you are Chris or if you have kids. When you are busy and time is short sometimes it’s more important to do things they like and they want so you can enjoy your time together. My youngest Georgie loves going to away games but is bored in Oakwell because ‘it’s so quiet and everybody is angry’ (also she misses Conor) whereas she loves it at other grounds where they make more effort for kids. So we go to other grounds. When I was in my 20s and lived in London I could get a season tickets and dedicate whole weekends to Barnsley when I was in my 30s I could live in Brighton and Tunbridge Wells and still happily have a season ticket going up and down on the day. Now I have different priorities. Adulting. Its **** but sometimes you have to grow up.

    That’s fair enough.

You didn’t explain you were doing it for the kids at the time. It was more along the lines of Barnsley F.C. and us fans were accepting mediocrity and Bradford F.C. and their fans had greater ambition.

I just hope these supporters are being well treated by the club.
