When was the last one we had? Premier League season apart. Redfearn certainly wasn't, he was surplus at Oldham. Glavin wasn't. No one down here knew who he was. Hourihane wasn't. Hendrie? I'd say not. Hignett. Possibly but that is sort of tied into the Premier League situation in that parachute money helped us get him. If you want an example of a signing that made the whole town sit up and take notice, create a buzz of anticipation I'd say....Allan Clarke.
Hammill is a strange one. Having thought he was an electric player in his first spell I was hopeful when he returned but far from convinced he would do the business. If I were a fan of any other club in the third tier at the time and my team had signed him I'd have been very much less than whelmed.
This whole "box office" tag doesn't help us. The names we'd get excited about are always going to be known and experienced just because they have to be. I don't know how anyone can get excited by some kid they've never heard of or seen to some degree. Whether they work out afterwards is a completely different thing. So yes, Frimpong was box office at the point of signing. He was also a box of frogs and a spectacular failure.
Awesome and slow. Actually, slow is an exaggregation. That would suggest he actually moved further than the centre circle. Absolutely brilliant player though.
Not sure that’s true if you were say a Rochdale fan and Keef had signed Hammill you’d probably have been creaming yourself.
I'd class box office as someone who brings in extra revenue at the gate. I'd be amazed if the signing of frimpong put a single extra person on the attendance.
Considering the level we were at, McPhail was a huge signing. A classy player, who I'm sure would have been a regular international had he not been made of glass.
He was. A recent member of Villas European Cup squad and a great finisher. Unfortunately we are probably talking about 10 million quid to get someone similar.
Parachute payments hadn't been introduced when we were relegated from the Premier League, so Craig Hignett's transfer fee was not down to parachute payments.
I was going to say that, his first game was a Tuesday night and I went - I rarely get to Oakwell for mid-week games so his signing got me to attend. If memory serves, he got 2 against Grimsby.
McPhail, and if memory serves the first use on the bbs of the phrase 'I'll show my *#*# ont Town Hall steps'
