Well obviously I cant argue if you had never heard of him you would know that better than me, but I certainly had . I still remember coming away from that first game being somewhat disappointed given the expectation level I had and being far more impressed with another signing who I hadnt heard of before -Steve Cooper. Cooper went on to be decent but Glavin untimately more than exceeded expectations. Not sure I would have said he was box office at the time though - not compared to Clarke or Hunter as signings

When Ronnie arrived he was little known outside of Scotland by the many especially in these parts ....i too recall one of the papers getting his name wrong
What I can say is I might not have known who he was but boy has he left an impression.... by far the best player I've ever seen in a Barnsley shirt

Steve Cooper? - he signed in 1988, 10 years after Ronnie!

Me too, we just agree to differ. Nothing wrong with that.

Do you mean Neil Cooper, old mate? He signed for us in January 1980, Glavin signed the previous Summer. Steve Cooper signed during the close season of 1988, nine years after Ronnie.

I did but I thought they both signed during the summer, We definitely signed Glavin and another scot at the same time I am sure I can picture the Chronicle doing a feature or am I really going senile

We signed Ronnie Glavin, Norman Hunter, Gary Pierce and Bobby Flavell during the Summer of 1979. However, you've got a long way to go before you reach my level of senility, Dave, old mate!:D

Remember Norman breaking his leg at Doncaster. In fact I thought I heard the break it was that bad.

In that case I'll defer my recollection to yours. :)
It's not how I remember Ronnie's arrival. I can't recall Redders being thought of as any better than a decent signing. Mists of time and onset of senility is my excuse.

How on Earth can you say Hendrie wasn't? He'd already scored 100 league goals when he signed for us, nearly all of them in the top two divisions. Likewise Paul Wilkinson.

Add to them, Geoff Thomas, an established England international and Kevin Richardson, a player with over 500 top flight appearances and an England cap.

Actually, old mate, it was your comment about no one knowing Glavin that threw me. As I said earlier, all the fans I knew had heard of him.
Never mind, it's hardly a major issue and it certainly doesn't adversely affect the high regard in which I hold both your good self and Northern Dreamer.

Viv Anderson, a massive household name, regular England international, multiple domestic trophy winner and pioneer for black footballers. Danny Wilson, another household name.

So in summary, you are wrong.

"Box Office"is all relative, but by our standards I'd say they were all box office signings apart from maybe Hourihane but even he was Player of the Year and captain of Plymouth when we signed him.
    .
Redfearn was one of Oldham's star players and got them promoted
Glavin was a full Scotland international who in his last season at Celtic outscored Kenny Dalglish. There was no internet back then which is probably why you say no one knew who he was but any football fan worth his salt had a Rothman's yearbook where you could look up players statistics. I remember when we signed him thinking wow, how the hell is he signing for Barnsley.
Hendrie was a class act wherever he played and I was amazed we managed to sign him
Same goes for Hignett, he could have gone to far bigger clubs than us.
