Ryan Air Spare a thought for poor ole Michael O’Leary, Chief Executive of Ryanair. After arriving in a hotel in Manchester, he went to the bar and asked for a pint of Guinness. The barman nodded and said, "That will be £1 please, Mr. O’Leary." Somewhat taken aback, O'Leary replied, "That's very cheap," and handed over his money. "Well, we do try to stay ahead of the competition", said the lbarman. "And we are serving free pints every Wednesday from 6 pm until 8 pm. We have the cheapest beer in England". "That is remarkable value", Michael comments. "I see you don't seem to have a glass, so you'll probably need one of ours. That will be £3 please." O'Leary scowled, but paid up. He took his drink and walked towards a seat. "Ah, you want to sit down?" said the barman. "That'll be an extra £2. You could have pre-booked the seat, and it would have only cost you £1." "I think you may be too big for the seat sir, can I ask you to sit in this frame please". Michael attempts to sit down but the frame is too small and when he can't squeeze in, he complains "Nobody would fit in that little frame". "I'm afraid if you can't fit in the frame you'll have to pay an extra surcharge of £4 for your seat sir". O'Leary swore to himself, but paid up. "I see that you have brought your laptop with you" added the barman. "And since that wasn't pre-booked either, that will be another £3." O'Leary was so incensed that he walked back to the bar, slammed his drink on the counter, and yelled, "This is ridiculous, I want to speak to the manager". "I see you want to use the counter," says the barman, "that will be £2 please." O'Leary's face was red with rage. "Do you know who I am?" "Of course I do Mr. O'Leary." "I've had enough! What sort of a Hotel is this? I come in for a quiet drink and you treat me like this. I insist on speaking to a manager!" "Here is his e-mail address, or if you wish, you can contact him between 9.00 am and 9.01am every morning, Monday to Tuesday at this free phone number. Calls are free, until they are answered, then there is a talking charge of only £1 per second, or part thereof". "I will never use this bar again". "OK sir, but do remember, we are the only hotel in England selling pints for £1."
I'll tell you what though.... There were no budget airlines flying into the airport nearest where my parents live until 5 years ago. Before then it cost me dear in the purse. Then Ryanair stepped in and saved me around 40% a flight!
He’s a grade-A lovely person. When he dies I will dance on his grave, dig him up and kill him again for good measure. Business practices bordering on the criminal. His **** company still owes me £160. Will never use them again under any circumstances. Hope they go bust and he ends up homeless.
Lol, like the joke. However, I used Ryanair a lot last year flying to Ireland. I only had a carry on bag, which they're pretty lax about re sizes, pre checked in online and was able to swan straight through no more than an hour before flying and enjoy some pretty cheap flights.
He does appear to be an unsavioury character who cares little for his employees: but the service itself has never let me down.
Not anymore! You need to book as a priority passenger now to be able to take a bag on bigger than a small handbag. If you don't the large bag will be taken off you at the gate and put in the hold. This has been applied retrospectively too, so we've just had to upgrade for Ireland in April. Which seems unfair given the rule wasn't in place at the time we booked. To be honest I get people's issues with them, and don't particularly like using them, but nailed on I'll use them if they're cheapest.
Haha. Was laughing at every line of this, mainly because I am using Ryanair in the early hours tmoz to go to Latvia for a stag doo, I have gone thru all the charges.
I'm off to Riga in a few weeks having just gotten back from Tallinn, hope you enjoy and can remember some of it at least ;-)
They're customer service is a bit ****, but personally I've never had any bother with them and I've used them a lot. I wouldn't particularly trust them to give a fck about me if something did go tits up, but having paid only 30 quid for my ticket, I'd probably be far more willing to grin and bear it than if it had been a £250 quid BA ticket. Which in any case no longer includes food and luggage. At least you expect that with a low coster. I'm a lot less tolerant towards BA still charging full prices, but offering budget airline service. As for O'Leary, he might come across as a bit of a lovely person (and probably is) , but he singlehandedly smashed what was effectively a price fixing cartel of national airlines in the 80's and 90's, charging rip-off prices and STILL running at a loss and being constantly bailed out using taxpayers' money, because governments were too afraid of letting their national carrier go bust. He lead the democratisation of short-haul air travel, and as someone who flies pretty regularly, I'm extremely thankful to him for that.
Don't care. Despise him and his shitbag company more than I can convey. Ruined a family holiday for us a few years back. Never forgive. I hope they go under.
Pinched a day’s holiday off me and my family by changing flight times at short notice - had booked them purely because of the favourable timing only for them to sell the slot on to someone else despite us having been booked on for 10 months.
I fly out to Belgium every fortnight with Ryanair for £12. Return with Brussels Airlines for £218. Both flights take just over an hour, do not include refreshments and the Brussels Airlines flight is delayed more than the Ryanair flight.
They are a budget airline and cheap. I use them about 10 times a year and take what I get. We were delayed for four hours a couple of months ago, claimed compensation and were paid out 400 euros each within 2 weeks, no hassle. Great customer service there
Stopped using Ryanair after numerous problems with them. Tend to use Wizz Air or Easy Jet, but sometimes BA.
Just seen your post. Got back early yesterday morning. Was pissed from start to finish. But... Riga is not the nicest place. Very old and gloomish. We enjoyed it as there was 32 of us getting wrecked every day. But wouldn’t go back.
Glad you said that, I've just booked a holiday to Athens in May and the flights are with Ryanair. We haven't got the tickets and things through yet so I hadn't seen what our allowance was but presumed I would be able to take a small case on. Anything else I need to do in advance to avoid random add on charges with Ryanair?
To be able to take a bag for the overhead bins you must now book priority boarding which is £6 each way, otherwise you can only take a bag which will fit underneath your seat anything else will be taken off you at the gate and put in the hold free of charge
