I use the M1 every day to and from work and depending on the time the speed is automatically reduced to 60mph on the motorway instead of 70mph. I've started doing that speed on it at other times too because it is still faster than the lorries so I don't feel like an hazard and it means I'm not stuck behind them (don't like following lorries as they reduce visibility), I've no idea what fuel I save but it onky costs me 1 minute 48 seconds a day going 10mph slower.

So you reckon they’ve turned the cameras on 24 hours a day to help me with my finances?
It’s been stated that raising the speed limit to 80mph would help the economy.

A few cars driving 80mph rather than 70mph in the middle of the night is going to have at most a negligible impact on global warming.

That’s what my problem with this is, the fact it’s 24 hours a day, which is what I’ve been referring to in all my posts.

You're obviously not really a true Yorkshireman....

Global warming is happening because everyone thinks that the little bit of CO2 they produce doesn't matter.

Just chill out mate, rules are rules get used to it.

Here's my final post on this thread. There is NO JUSTIFICATION for speeding period.

Just analyse why you want to drive at 80mph and give me ONE vitally positive reason why anyone should do it other than to fulfil some strange personal desire for speed. (Excepting emergencies like childbirth, heart attacks or strokes etc of course).

Oh and stop watching Top Gear on Dave.

Driving home last night on the Sheffield " smart " motorway the gantry posted a 40 limit .
All traffic had to brake sharply down from 70 or whatever speed was being done .
Not a planet saving decision there .

It was worse than that I had it driving home leaving Wombwell sround 8pm
Shortly after joining at Birdwell it went down to 60 then 50 then to 40 with the sign warning of crosswinds on the bridge I then trundled at 40 for several gantries before finally reaching Tinsley where I couldn’t even feel the wind on the car in fact the wind of the lorries overtaking me at 55 was much more noticeable even after the viaduct had ended there was at least one more reapeater at 40

Excluding long term roadworks I had 5 episodes of incorrect use of the smart motorway signs between Wombwell and Farnham in very light traffic on the M1 and M25 including slowing to 40 for miles because there was a broken down car at the side of the road then no all clear, The usual Congestion with the limit fluctuating between 60 and 50 several times despite there being barely one lane of traffic, an other case were after the 40 ended?several blank gantries and then finally after everyone had already speeded up an all clear. if I can be bothered I might document it properly I might write it all in a new thread but particularly dangerous is just stopping illuminating gantries after several 40limited ones. No one known what the limit is some cars keep at 40 others decide to go back to 70. I defy anyone to justify that. I actually don’t know how that works especially when it’s dark you don’t even always see the non illuminated gantries
