Doesn't look much different to when he was my headmaster at Burton road juniors in the mid 80s , sithi.
He was at Burton Road? I was at Burton rd and then went to priory - he was my headmaster from around 84
If you want me to pass a message on i will do. Im out with his lad on saturday. If you want to send me your name....
I was at Burton Road from about 1986(I think), but it was Mr Thakerah(sp) who was head teacher then. He must have replaced Mr Gawthorpe...
Ballacks, yes you are right it was thakerah at Burton rd, he replaced Mr Townsend , I had gawthorpe for three years at priory , soz for the mix up, sithi.
Mr Thakerah passed away a few years ago - my mum is friends with his wife. Met him a few times- had some words of encouragement or me as I started my teaching career
He was my form head and house head at Wombwell High so that would have been 1967 (ish). He had very large Gym Shoes which covered an awful largie are of your backside in the heady days of punishment for transgressions. You never knew when he was coming as although he was and is a very large man he covered twice the ground others did in a shorter period of time. He caught me half asleep in his class and asked me what I intended to do when I left school , there was a book on the side about a career in the Royal Navy so to save face and possible size 13 I said I was going to join the Navy. He in his own way I suppose planted an idea which I thought wasn't as far fetched or stupid as it seemed. I ended up going down to Portsmouth with the year ahead of me which I think was his idea and had a weekend in HMS Nelson visiting ships and training establishments. I was 15, I applied to join went to the recruiting office on my own, caught a train later to Manchester for a medical on my own and then caught a train from Wombwell Station to Ipswich, Can you see this happening in todays age, so Mr Gawthorpe....... the best 12 years of my life followed and thanks to your intervention and guidance I thank you.
