Gary O'Connor was fantastic on his debut but gash after that. I don't think McBurnie will go the same way. Back in the 80's I remember David Geddes being outstanding on his debut and the lad from Iceland who was on loan from Wednesday (Siggi Johnnson).
Gethin Jones against Leeds was a good one from last year. His first day with us if i recall, playing left back, and never put a foot wrong. Shame he never hit that level again.
When you get to a certain age the memory prevents you from recalling. But from what I can still remember, that was as good as any. The lad has confidence and awareness. I spotted him at one point giving out directions to various other team members. He looks like he might be gangly, but he turns out to be strong on the ball, and very good at positioning himself. He didn't stay in one place either, running out to help the wingers. He is class, full stop. He'd be a worthwhile permanent investment, but no way should he come if we play in League One. He's too good for that. But on the subject of memorable debuts, well Mido's still has to be up there.
Watching Mido waddle onto the pitch was the most surreal moment I can remember, it just about beats the day I saw Odejayi playing on the wing away at Preston.
I had the privilege to be there that night too, I think as a team it was probably the greatest taking apart of an opposition I've seen from Barnsley. Higgy missed a penalty though, so only 8 out of 10
Higgy"s was good , but once we were 3 nil down after 7 minutes to Fulham & we fought back to 3 v 3 & up popped Tony Cunningham on his home debut to head home the winner , Roy of the Rovers stuff , 4 v 3 , what a turn round
I was really impressed with Mcburnie today. Saw him last week and couldn't fault his effort, but today he turned it up a notch. Doesn't look much like Ashley Ward, but his style of play reminded me of him today - strong in the air, and his timing is superb for coming in late and nicking the ball away from the defender. Taking high balls down for himself and making himself a yard of space with his quick feet, and not scared to shoot. He and isgrove gave their defenders a torrid time today.
