He's not bothered about his CV, just the money. Leeds is guaranteed money succeed or fail, and the chances are he'll have a sacking to his name when he leaves there.
Leeds is a free hit for any manager. So sure he's ambitious but if he fails it will have no effect on his prospects of getting another job.
One thing about his ambition. Hes said a few times now at Leeds 'i always knew I was going to leave Barnsley. With by getting sacked or a better job elsewhere'. Did he ever mention that he only saw us as a stepping stone while he was here?
Exactly this! Leeds are a sacking club, so by jumping ship to Leeds, not only does he avoid getting a relegation on his CV if we go down but he also gets a shot in a bigger job with more money/payout, which won't affect his reputation much if he gets sacked at that club. It's quite easy to see why he did it.
In my eyes, the position of head coach/manager at Barnsley is the ultimate job in football... Who in his right mind wouldn't want it? We're lovely...
In fairness to him he has said in interviews when he was with us that was the case He was saying it in the content of being reticent about taking the post because he loves the club, ie he would most likely be sacked or if he did well, get poached He was right! I’ve been very critical of the way in which he left and still can’t fathom how a barnsley fan can work for Leeds and more importantly leave us in the ****, but I think criticism levelled above is unfair
Yes but his point was that he had a very secure job as u23 coach / academy - so by taking the step up that security was going to leave him one way or the other I think it is a fair point.
My point was he hasn’t just left for the money - he’s left to further his career. A shrewd move too as he wasn’t far off being sacked.
It was a genuine question as I don't remember him ever saying it but to be honest I rarely listened to his (or any Barnsley managers) interviews.
Just watched his interview on sky before the sheff united game where he is asked do you think it' a risk coming here? His reply is "no could have stayed where I was but I've come here to this massive club to test myself" just comes across as a arrogant w@nker hope he fails. And for the record yes smart move he was one of the main reasons we are in this battle. Least he has got himself a 18 month contract worth 30k a week no matter what.
I agree it's a shrewd move, but I don't see it as a career move as much as a financial one. Leeds have averaged 2 managers per season for the last 5 years. Do you think he would have left us if he wasn't guaranteed the cushion of a big pay off if he gets sacked. Would he buggery. Of course we would have paid him out had we sacked him, but it wouldn't be in the same league as what he'll get there. Shrewd move yes, but money motivated.
