I’ve just finished reading his book, and I’ve got to say, it’s a belter. When you look at the reviews, it gets some really good feedback. Names and shames several managers and players. Very interesting insight into the QPR and Burnley promotion teams. Proper insight into the world of football and the changing room. He’s had his issues, to which he admits, and is now changing his outlook and potentially preparing for coaching and management. If you read the book, you’ll understand his philosophy on management and his plans how to do it - basically all about hard work, determination and a winning mentality. Interestingly, he says he now sees 3 types of player, and there’s only one you can truly work with, the other 2 just need binning off:- 1) Those who are willing to improve on any level they can, to get better. 2) Those who think they are already good enough so don’t need to improve. 3) Those who are basically crap or not interested, and maybe only there for money. Interestingly, he says get rid of players who are in groups 2 & 3 and you should have a good nucleus to work with. Sound familiar?? You don’t have to be a Joey Barton fan to enjoy it - and some of his childhood experiences are similar to what you’d get in certain parts of Barnsley back in the day.
Sounds interesting and I'll definitely give it a go. I would take issue with Type 3 though, as at the level Barton played at, you don't ever get even squad players who are "crap". Wrong attitude or in football for the wrong reasons - maybe. But crap? My mate from school was easily the best player I've ever played with or against. Some of the things he could do with a ball, whether in training or in a match an illusionist would be proud of. His entire professional career consisted of two substitute appearances for Mansfield. Likewise my dad played with Ian Culverhouse's father at university. Said the ball just stuck to him like glue. West Ham reserves was as far as he got. The standard which professional footballers play at even in the lower leagues is so far and away higher from anything most people are capable of, that to even be close to making a living out of the game, you have to be exceptionally good.
Yeah, I agree. He explains it more though - I think his ‘crap’ remark (it might not be the exact phrase he used) was basically where they weren’t interested, or in the QPR days, were signed for several million from overseas clubs, but were no better than the U18 YTS lad they already had. A really good read - and if you download on Audible, Joey narrates it himself. A brilliant insight into Peter Schmeichal too - made me laugh but made total sense.
Yeah It’s a great book, and to be fair, you kinda think after reading it, that he will make a good manager. But he’ll be one of these where he either lasts 6 months before getting sacked, or he’ll do 3 years with 2 promotions. Worth a punt when he’s ready.
Highly intelligent bloke, but possibly a bit too much of a loose cannon to be a good manager. Or even given a chance to prove his worth?
He’ll either go one way or the other. He says he’d take his mate Steve Black in with him too - most know Steve Black anyway, but he’s certainly a respected guy in his own right. http://www.steveblack.co.uk
I love listening to him no ******** tells it as it is and like an earlier poster says very intelligent bloke.
So what he's saying then is that he himself should have been unemployed for 10 years as should messi, Harry Kane etc. The man talks rubbish. What he's saying is 'im a weak individual and the only players I could possibly get respect from are young kids who look up to me. Everyone else knows I'm a knobhead so I'd have to release them'
Try reading it. He cited Messi as a player who kids should look up to, as Messi is the hardest working in training as well as on match day. And still puts in 110% all the time. Same for Ronaldo. He admits he’s not the tallest, fastest or most talented. But worked and still works very hard on his fitness and stamina to ensure he could out-battle any opposition or even fellow team members trying to take his place.

I'd rather read a football philosophy book written by young nudger and edited by hemsworth tyke than read one by a ''man" who has placed bets on matches he's been involved in, assaulted numerous teammates, spent time in prison and has been given extended bans several time for attacking people. The man is an idiot who thinks he is clever
How does he know about Messi or Ronaldho.. ?? He's a thug imho.. last ex footballer I'd expect to be a manager ..
