I've thought about this for a while. Is there a science to picking the perfect manager for a club?.The answer is no.In my 50 odd years of watching the Reds the most success we've had as been with first time managers apart from Bassett. One year we cried out for experience so Mr D.broke the bank to fetch in Mel Machin. In the end the football was so bad we ended up with 3000 one day for a Championship game. I've seen the name Jack Ross today and straightaway there's condemnation for him.Why?.For all we know he might be the Next Sir Alec or Jock Stein.I agree he might be neither but who is the perfect manager.
At least I'd heard of most of the managers we employed or were linked with back then Quite a few in recent years I've had to look up on Google. Same goes for quite a few of our players.
You have to decide on what you want from him, for us I’d want attacking style of play, in still a good work ethic into the team, and he as to have the ability to develop young players, improving our squad on the training ground is the most important factor to us. Then I’d set about identifying a man I believe may have them skills. Simple really.
Patrick Cryne himself told me that there was decent amount of good fortune attached as to whether a manager turned out to be a good one or not. "Not an exact science" was his summation.
Most of our promotions and cup successes have been with first time managers such as Allan Clarke, Norman Hunter, Danny Wilson, Simon Davey, Paul Heckingbottom etc whereas Iley, Machin, Hill, Johnson etc had a fair bit of managerial experience prior to joining us and weren't too successful. Alex Neil was relatively unknown when he came down from Scotland to Norwich but got them promoted. He's not doing too bad a job at Preston either who must have a similar budget to us. I think Jack Ross could just be the manager to get us back on track so if he gets the job let's give him a chance .
