... was on Deedar FM earlier, from Hillsborough, where he was summarising for Swansea. Said he was glad to be back in SY and was off out tonight. Had a night out in Holmfirth last night. Thought he was ok in a fairly rubbish team fr us.
Didn't him and Glavin share a goal in a game a long time ago? Seem to remember them both getting a toe end on a chance and both players claimed it
I remember him... think made his name at Charlton if I remember, without looking. Don't think he was here long, was he a loan?
Signed from Swansea in 1984 by Bobby Collins. He didn't score a single goal in his first season. Allan Clarke took over in the Summer of 1985. Walsh played up front with David Hirst and Gordon Owen and finished that 1985/86 season as our top scorer, before leaving the following Summer on a free transfer to Grimsby. However, I'm a bit bemused by anyone calling a Barnsley team fairly rubbish when it contained the likes of Paul Futcher, Larry May, Stuart Gray, Joe Joyce, Clive Baker, Gwyn Thomas, Ronnie Glavin, Hirst, Owen and, in Walsh's first season David Geddis & Billy Ronson. Ah, well.
David Hirsts first reds goal came against Leeds and I think Walsh and Owen got the other two if memory serves me right. Beat them away as well that season. Hirsty had been chomping at the bit for a few games before he broke his duck.
Thats kind of what I was getting at Lil when I asked about the players who he played alongside. That '85-86 season doesn't stand out as especially memorable, but its unfair to refer to it as dull and/or rubbish. And Id forgot Clarkie had come back by then, I was thinking he came back in '86. And Fitz, Stuart Gray was a favourite of mine as well. How many times did he fill-in somewhere as a utility man, and still keep scoring.
Didn't he hit the post in a few games before he got his first goal ? Did he then score about 10 in 10 and then get injured.
My lasting memory of David Geddis, is Wimbledon away. Came back from 2-0 down to lead 3-2 with around 150 reds fans bouncing around on the open end. I thing he scored two of our goals that day, and he "outWimbledoned" their defenders. They equalised late on though just to ruin our day.
I actually thought he played later than that. I loved the players you mention. It was a good team, just not Norman Hunter's team - which was a very hard act to follow!. btw I was only 14
This takes me back. Hirst was my favourite player and Walsh was my mate's. A bit tongue in cheek from my mate as he always took pity on a struggler. You can imagine the banter then, when Walsh (15) outscored Hirst (9) in the 1985/86 season. There were some mitigating circumstances though. Hirst stood on the ball at Leeds and was carried off injured by Winnie. He didn't seem the same player for the rest of the season.
Memory is a bit jaded, but I went all over that season and probably saw all his games. He was a special player, often overlooked now because he went to Wednesday. That goal against Leeds though, I can remember it like yesterday. Barged his way through and lashed it in. No stopping him after that, as you rightly say.
Haha. Did Walsh and Hirst both score in a 3-0 win at Blackburn? Used to love away games there - the Darwin End. Always a good turnout from Barnsley.
That was Geddis's last game and Rodger Wylde's first. We've had a few instances over the years where key players have overlapped for one game. The 7-1 v Huddersfield was the only occasion Ward, Dyer and Hignett all played together.
