This reminds me of my first away game in that '85 season, when Bradford had to use the old Huddersfield - Leeds Road ground for some of their home games. It was largely uneventful and we lost 2-0, but Hirsty played and I remember the occasion and the day out better than the match.
Loved Rodger the dodger. Either his legs had gone or he was never very quick, but he knew where the onion bag was. His goals got us out of trouble not long after that didn't they? 3 2 win at Sunderland from 2 behind was brilliant.
Strange season that. Broke down twice in a week as well. En route to Shrewsbury on the Saturday and then Sunderland in midweek for full members cup. Think we finally won at grim on sea, courtesy of a Stuart Gray goal, which I missed cos I went to toilet.
What a day that was. That result meant Sunderland were in the relegation play offs. Remember them? We were packed into a little corner being pelted with missiles. One of the occasions when we were lucky to get away alive.
the "miners strike + aftermath" team was quite good considering, it was always "we can't afford to go up" team, jeez, is it 30odd years ago?
Wow, 6 straight defeats at the start of the '86 season and I still don't think we wanted Clarkie out just then did we. And after one heck of a turnaround we finished near mid table, and this did indeed include our very rare win away at Sunderland - Roker park on the last day. We won 2-3 after being 2-0 down, and they dropped into the old style relegation play offs and ended up going down.
We went in the car and got chased after they saw us waving to lads on our coaches. Lol Great memories
We went to that game. Can remember their fans chanting that we were a Mickey Mouse Club.... we all went bonkers when we went 3-2 up, and started chanting it back at them. Came out of Roker Park and their were Sunderland scarves discarded all over the place.
All the talk on this thread about Blundell Park & Roker Park brings back the same memory for me. I was always bloody freezing at both venues!
Both Geddis and Wylde had homicidal tendencies. Wylde did a job on Dennis Mortimer in his brief time with the Blunts. It was at Bramall Lane too. Right up there with Norman Hunter on Alex Sabella and Steve Cooper on Jim Gannon, the latter within seconds of the kick-off.
only went to roker park once. loved every second, lost 1-0 on a freezing cold day, walked out side by with the s'land fans, best old fashioned ground going
Went to Roker once to watch Carlisle in the cup with my mate - it was same day we played Bromsgrove. All crowd were laughing at us at half time Remember a pub outside the ground - they all hissed at us when they realised we weren't local
Blundell park is one of the rare grounds where I've stood or sat at both ends.coldest day I remember there was when they loved us 6 1. It's was flipping freezing! Grimsby fan moved into my mates street back in the 80s, and he went to a few of the games and stood with him in the home end when they played us. Was always one of my favourite fixtures. Straight drive there, easy to get away and some cracking games over the years.
I also think Oldham's Boundary Park and Hartlepool's Victoria Park were always bloody cold, too. Then again, I'm probably nowt but a wimp!
