Me too I only went there once and the only thing I can remember is the upper tier of the stand to our right en mass shouting Barnsley Barnsley Barnsley and waving there hands in the campest gayest way possible, it was surreal to say the least.
Last time we went to Oldham it was freezing. Late winner to warm us up. Think I've been to hartlepool near start of end of season and it was t shirts, but also boxing day when it was cold. That boxing day game was a strange one. We won without playing at all well, but went downhill from that game onwards. Think Thordarson was manager.
I remember the night when I jumped over a row of seats when we scored and sprained both ankles. We won 2-1 with goals from Walsh and Owen.
Coldest was Oakwell against Watford at Oakwell sometime around Christmas. All I remember was van der larn was injured and I don’t think he played again. May have been 0-0. My brother in law who likes a pint insisted we went home rather than the pub after as he was that cold.
Talking of Hartlepool Utd , I went there when Winnie & Pat Howard were playing & Howard scored the winner , came outside after the match & tried to get to the coaches , it was like world war 3 had broken out , never seen trouble like it , minds you , I survived to tell the tale , just !
That's good thing about modern football. I know trouble still happens, but you can go to most places nowadays without the threat. . . . . Or maybe it's because I'm now in my 50s and no one's bothered about me? Lol
I Its certainly a lot safer these days than back in the mid sixties when trouble started to escalate & grow like a cancer in the game & it proceeded to get worse over the years until segregation & all seater stadiums seemed to improve things . I think the difference today is, that if you want trouble you can always find it , but in the early days it was hard to avoid it full stop
I think we’ve shared this memory before but boundary park probably around 88/89 We lost 2 nil and still wouldn’t have had a shot on target now let alone a goal. It was singularly the coldest I’ve ever been at a football match.
Actually, old mate in 1988/89 we drew 1-1 there with Steve Cooper scoring a last minute equaliser for us on the opening day of the season. I was still cold! Was the game you're on about the season after?
Used to be a right bogey ground Oldham. Went every season for years and never saw us win until our promotion season. The plastic pitch certainly seemed to give them an advantage and I'm pretty sure they went up into the top flight when they had that. We had some good night's with their lads after the games. We used to play them at football and they took us to a place on Huddersfield road where there were a few local pubs. When you go there now, the ground is pretty much unchanged from back then, apart from one new stand. It's hard to believe that they once went into the top flight and had some very good players.
I remember it being a real bog of a pitch before the plastic. I was only a kid at the time but remember the journey over the tops to get there. Was it there we got that shocking penalty decision involving Archdeacon? I also remember going to Friday night games at Stockport County. Happy days!
We won our first game there Fitz when Boundary park went to normal grass, 0-1 thanks to Andy Payton's goal, in Jan '96 I think. But we had to go back there about 10 days later for that absolute travesty of a penalty decision that put us out of the Fa cup replay.
We'd lost our strike force from the previous season and then lost our opening six matches at the start of the following one. We were even playing Gwyn Thomas as a make shift striker, alongside the 17 year old loanee from Sheffield Wednesday Carl Bradshaw. I think most of the four thousand or so fans fans attending at that time knew Clarkey was having to work with both hands tied behind his back, meaning he got little, or no, stick from the put upon faithful.
