Sorry but everybody knew Townsend is a poor goalkeeper and that Davies lack of form brought him into the frame. But now is the time to bring Davies back into the team because nobody including myself has confidence in Townsend ability. Jose has seen some the team perform so will be getting the formation he prefers ready for Birmingham.
i cant stand adam davies as a goalkeeper, but it’s time he was brought back to the starting xi, the only thing townsend has is good distribution.
No it wasn't, it was time for Davies to sit out as he had been appalling all season. The reckless act was failing to sign a new goalkeeper in January.
Townsend made one mistake last night - his positioning for the free kick. Other than that was ok and distribution was very good. Davies, who I also think is decent, made several mistakes across several games, and his distribution is not as good. Why drop Townsend? Still deserves a run at it.
It was Townsend's lack of height more than positioning that let the free kick in. Davies would have at least got a hand to it.
Thats ok then .. davies would have got ' at least a hand to it ' still would have gone in.. give townsend a few games hes been left in u23s for over a year lets see what he can do
Townsend could do nothing about the first goal last night. When are our defenders going to learn that you can't give an attacker the space to do what Jamie Allen did in the first minute.? Absolute copycat of Scowen's goal for QPR and something that the Burton coaching staff had obviously picked up on. Townsend tries his best, but having watched the replay of their second on Sky a few times over, the most charitable thing I can say, is that his positioning, left a lot to be desired.! In summary, quite a lot for him to think about. Be interesting to see who gets the jersey on Saturday. I said yesterday before the game, that we should start with Moore and McBurnie up top. Let's hope Jose gives that pairing a shot against a Brum. Their defence look to be absolutely woeful in the air.
I agree - 1st he couldn’t do anything about. 2nd he’ll learn from quickly. But we allowed Davies a run of mistakes, so to dump Townsend after 1 is ridiculous. Townsend’s distribution is impressive though - I can see why he was called a ‘sweeper keeper’ when first signed. As soon as he has the ball, he’s looking for that quick ball or throw out to get play going quickly. And he is very accurate with these - probably the best keeper in a while we have for this attribute. Some of is kicking in the 2nd half was top drawer - found our player with accuracy. I like Davies too though - he’s a good keeper and served us well upto recently. But I think you’ve just got to be fair to Townsend at the moment. I genuinely believe we do have two good senior keepers at the club, but with a constantly changing back 4 and generally poor form of the 10 in front of them, it’s always going to be difficult for them.
There is no doubt that Davies is a superior goalkeeper. His distribution is shocking at times, but in terms of shot stopping, positioning and presence he is streets ahead of Townsend on raw ability. The trouble is he was woefully out of form and his confidence was shot. He was mentally done in and needed a rest. I’m not sure it’s definitely time to bring him back; it’s close if not. But I’m afraid I would have more confidence in him than Townsend long term. Even in the form he was in, for the free kick I’d say Davies would have been at least a yard or two further to his left, that might have meant the lad wouldn’t even have tried to just float it over the wall - but assuming he did, it would have been saved. If you are Man City (I know they’ve got Ederson now but look back to last year), you can afford to sacrifice goalkeeping ability for better distribution, and pick a Claudio Bravo type even though they couldn’t catch a cold. In our position we need to ensure we are solid. Putting the ball into touch when trying to pick a pass is frustrating but it doesn’t directly lead to goals. Now Davo has had a rest I would hope he is refreshed and chomping at the bit.
At this point in their careers neither are good enough for the championship but we’re stuck with them until the summer so whoever’s in the net lets get behind them
being bit harsh on Townsend ,worldy at QPR ,pen v Wednesday, great strike against Burton and decent free kick against Burton, last one if he had stood further to his left then lad had put it in top corner at otherside, then everyone be moaning saying he too far other way,the wall was protecting the side it went in, just a great strike
His positioning was fine, in fact, it was text book. He set up his wall and then defended 'his' side of the goal. If he gets beat at that side, then that's his fault - if the player gets the ball up and over the wall and into the corner, then fair play. The free kick was super and the Burton lad deserved credit for it; Townsend cannot take any blame whatsoever.
I've not seen enough of Townsend to judge, but from the brief comparison I have, Davies is the better shot stopper. In terms of decision making and commanding his area, Davies is absolutely shocking - he's akin to a 17 year old going through a confidence crisis. Again, not seen Townsend have to do a lot of sweeping or coming to collect crosses up to now, but if he's as bad as Davies is, then Davies should get the nod marginally.
