Time will tell. Townsend deserves his shot - been a decent servant and kept his nose clean whilst working hard. Fair play to him - he doesn’t want to be a no.2 like some.

I rate both keepers highly and happy with either in net, but for now, it’s Townsend’s chance. But, due to lack of competitive football (I don’t know why he didn’t play in cup games for us), it’s a learning curve for him - hasn’t played anywhere near as many games as Davies has.

tried to be fair, no bias for either keeper, just put down mistakes no one could argue with

How many mistakes have our outfield players made this season that have led to goals or not scoring? I believe Adam needs a rest to help him get his form and confidence back but I still believe he's our best keeper.

I like Davies, but I think he's had a poor season and believe he should have been rested before he was. So far, I wouldn't blame Townsend for any goal we've conceded. He's made a couple of errors, but crucially they haven't resulted in us conceding goals. He's also made so fine saves.

It's my opinion that Davies will be the better keeper in the long run, but that doesn't mean we should play him when his form has dipped. At present I reckon Townsend deserves his chance, he hasn't let us down and while ever that is the case he keeps the jersey. Hopefully Davies can use this time out of the spotlight to regain the form he once showed.

It would be very interesting to analyse in depth the mistakes our defenders have made in the same games , also in fairness to Davies why not list all the superb saves he has made on a match by match basis

JM will decide in the end and his is the only opinion that decides selection in the end. For what its worth I'd like to see Townsend get a run - just to see what we've got in way of options. It won't hurt Davies to role reverse for as long as it takes to get back in (if he does).
Or maybe a overseas keeper comes in next window?

I think if Davies had been in goal for Burtons second goal the other night he would have got pelters , he gave the lad two thirds of the goal to aim at , which he duly dispatched , not having a go at the lad , they all make mistakes

Isn't that how keepers always position for freekicks? If he had been central he wouldn't have been able to see the ball till it passed the wall. Keeper covers one side and the wall is supposed to cover the other but the wall failed to jump.

Only thing he did wrong for me was not telling someone to stand on the post he couldn't reach

The lack of a keeper signing in January could cost us dearly. Doubt either Townsend or Davies will be number 1 next season if we stay up.

I would say that in my time as a supporter the current keepers are amongst the worst we have had.

First signing in June needs to be a new one for me.

I like davies and you don't become a bad keeper over night But he kept making mistake after mistake and his confidence was rock bottom. Townsend should have been given a chance a long time ago.

Precisely , he sets his wall up & his defenders & should have had someone on the post or protecting it & also he was too far over to give him self a chance of getting across . We were sat in the west stand & were saying before the kick was taken that the wall was too far over & it was gifting them a chance

Both keepers are more than capable.

Davies just suffered a lack of form - not helped by having various pairings of CB in front of him. You’re only as good as what’s in front of you.

Townsend has matured and is a good keeper - just needs game time to get better and learn more. To be fair to him, he’s tried to move to get game time - I’d rather someone push then just sit happy with a no. 2 role.

Both are decent keepers. Davies will be here next season. Townsend is out of contract I think, and unless he gets promised to start the season as first choice, he’ll probably go elsewhere.

    Both are ideally suited us.

Cleary too young to remember Roy 'Cyanide' then ? Once remember him kneeling to pick up a 'soft' backpass ( allowed in those days) and somehow it rolled past him and just managed to creep over the line (not sure it even had enough pace to hit the back netting)

Worse still it was televised and he was interviewed post match (think it may have been Keith Macklin) and when asked about it he said in his strong Yorkshire accent something along the lines of " Well Keith, all the best keepers mek mistakes from time to time tha knows!"

Yep Roy they certainly do. Fond memories of those days though even if we were 3rd & 4th division cannon fodder for the bigger clubs.

Before my time. First keeper I didn't rate was Phil Whitehead.

We've had some great keepers and some bloody awful ones. I'd say Davies is maybe on a par with Nick Colgan.

Phil Whitehead was unlucky in that he made an awful start to his Barnsley career, was dropped for Lee Butler, and didn't get his place back until Butler got injured and Watson was called up for the England U19's who were in the finals of a major tournament. He proceeded to play extremely well, but the emergence of Watson meant his future was away from Oakwell. Left for Oxford, where by all accounts he was pretty reliable.

March 1969, a 2-2 draw at home to Tranmere. Footage of the game starts at about 4min 30s, sounds like the great Barry Davies commentating. Going by your description this must be the game you refer to based on the goals?!!

I wasn't born until 1974, but can also remember a few of the old businesses advertising on the perimeter. March the Tailor one in particular.
