Istvan Ferenczi still playing at 40 years old (and banging them in) for Vesas in Hungarys top flight. Wish he'd stayed a bit longer.
Not really, there was a lot left in Stan according to my Hungarian mate...but Davey kept him playing even though he was carrying an injury, once he was properly rested he was back to his best.
Proper cult hero. Never seen anyone with so little connection to the club or town give as much effort than Stan did. You'd have thought he was Barnsley born and bred the way he kissed the badge and got the fans revved up. I remember his debut when he was given about 5 minutes to try and snatch an equaliser (I forget who we were playing), and he looked genuinely gutted that he didn't manage it. He was a centre forward akin to the ones I watched growing up in the 90s, I think that's why I loved him deep down. I think he left at the right time, but he certainly one of the players from that particular era I look back on with great fondness.
Was in Budapest about four years ago and on the last night got talking to the waiter in restaurant. He asked where we were from and his whole face lit up when I told him 'Barnsley'. Told us his best mate, Istvan Ferenczi used to play for Barnsley and offered to fetch him to meet us the following night, very disappointed it was not to be as we were flying home the following morning.
Unbelievable guy. He once asked to meet me at Toby Carvery a brought me one of his matchworn shirts. Wished me happy birthday on facebook the other month as well. Top guy.
