Think we can safely say the decision was correct yesterday

It’s the typical ‘I’m alright, Jack’. All the talk of ‘stay at home’ doesn’t take into account the fact that Norwich players and staff have no such choice if we call in on. It doesn’t take into account the referee, linesmen and fourth official. It doesn’t take into account all our staff needed to get a match on from players, playing staff, caterers, turnstile operators, programme sellers, security, box office staff, media etc. Get a few of them saying they can’t make it in from wherever they live and match is off last minute. That’s before even starting to think about fan’s safety. What about if we need to evacuate? Could we do that safely in the conditions, taking into account the number of old, very young and disabled supporters who would find it more difficult in this weather. Are there clear routes for emergency vehicles? I’m sure some people think it’s just about if they personally can walk there from their house ten minutes down the road.

 

The biggest problem is I can’t go to the rearranged fixture!!!

 

But using that logic ALL businesses should be forced to close. I can understand that fans may feel pressured to attend oakwell rather than meadowhall because of the pre bought tickets but is the turnstile operator at oakwell under any more pressure to go to work than the security guard at meadowhall is? If you believe one business should close to protect its employees then surely you should believe all businesses should close for the same reason

 

Perhaps you might think of others and not be so selfish.

 

No it’s not because my point isn’t solely that they shouldn’t ask the Barnsley based staff to attempt to go to work (that argument was for the Norwich based staff) but that if Barnsley staff are asked to but don’t make it in the match will be off. That would have a way bigger impact than calling it off yesterday due to the number of travelling fans.

 

And yet over the years we have travelled,watched and played in far worse conditions.Sorry JD I get what you are saying but its getting a bit over protective for me now

 

Has anyone been to the ground over the last few days? If so, what are the streets like?

I would have thought problem would be with causeways from town to ground which is one big hill. Also hill down from Sheffield road which gets a lot of foot traffic on match days. Away car park is just rough ground as is riding for disabled which gets well used on matchdays but could be inaccessible today.

 

Yes , I went yesterday morning & I posted that all though the ground etc was in reasonable shape , the approach from the town to the ground was tricky, the footpaths were frozen over & of course it has snowed again over night which will have made it even trickier . I cannot believe people are moaning that it is off , we get a match put off about every Stairfoot flood , its once a blue moon & its a game of football which has been put back to another day , its not the end of the world , live with it as there are far more serious things to worry about , end of

 

I live on Mount Vernon Road 10/15 mins walk from the ground. Even now, at 2pm Saturday the pavements along this busy road and walkway are perilous. I would not at this minute want to be leaving my house and walking down to Oakwell.

Still less would I have fancied sitting in the ground for 2 hours then walking back up the hill, in the dark and in even lower temperatures.

The right decision has been made.

 

I posted a fan's video from Twitter on another thread, but it's been removed now by the user for some reason. The club's photo of the away car park exit posted at 13.00 yesterday was white over, but the video of the same area posted at 14.46 yesterday was almost clear. Grove Street itself was virtually clear as well, but Belgrave Road was more patchy.

 

I’m still annoyed over the Charlton fiasco a couple of years when I travelled and spent 100s of quid for nowt. An early cancellation was the right decision.

 

How far do you go with the safety aspect. 16 league games have survived the weather, where only the pitch and immediate stadium vicinity has been considered. Shouldn't this be another area where there is consistency? Fog is arguably more dangerous to travel in, but as long as visibility is good at the ground, the match goes ahead.

 

Do you honestly think it's right to consider away fans in coming to a decision whether to postpone a match? Shame the England v Iceland match wasn't called off due to bad weather in Iceland. I guess the country would be shut if you were PM then and Mount Everest and the South Pole would remain unconquered because it was too risky to get there.
It's a sad indictment of the country today that we live in a nanny state where people can't make their own decisions.

Not just away fans though. Lad who sits near to me travels from Norwich and I have two season ticket holding mates that travel up from Guildford and Walton on Thames.

 

No snow here in South Lakes...just got back from cycling...it's f.. freezing though, Morecambe game called off, again yesterday......

 

It was awful.Getting called off at 1,0 clock and realise we had to keep drinking for another 8 hours.Ah well somebody had to do it.In the end we had a great day still talked about now.
