Not going to happen unfortunately. He will be snapped up in no time by a bigger club the way he's playing or he will stay with Swansea.
Have you been living under a rock since January 2017? What generally happens to players when they do well for us? Answer: they go to a team that can pay them more money (or in Oli's case, stay at one). I would love him here next season but it's not gonna happen.
If you read what the lad actually says, its clear he wants to go back to Swansea and get regular premier league football and the way he is playing for us is only going to make that wish come true. Lets hope the lad saves us from relegation, achieves his dreams and its a win-win all round.
McBurnie and how the new management team deal with this situation will be a big indicator of the new regime. Lets assume he carries on in a similar vein for the remainder of his loan spell and we stay up. If we fight tooth and nail and sign him for next season that tells us one thing. If we fight tooth and nail and loose out on him to a premier league club or club with parachute payments that tells us another - which is not necesarily all bad. If we loose him to Leeds well - for me - that will say a lot.
Think people need to give up on this happening. They'll be much bigger clubs, who are higher up the league table and can offer substantially more wages who will be going in for him. Sad fact is that even Leeds are still a bigger draw for most players. Not saying we shouldn't try, but think Oli would be a bit daft to choose us considering the options he will have.
Honestly, people that think we’re in with a chance of signing him are way off. Leeds are way off too. Depending how his form continues (or doesn’t) until the end of the season, he will be at either Swansea, Rangers or a top championship club next year. Enjoy him whilst he’s here.
In theory, given our current owners, we can afford any player we want as long as we can square it with FFP. In practice they're unlikely to spend that sort of cash just yet. Even if they did match his transfer fee and wage demands he'd have the following choice. Join us and get into the Premier League in say, two to three seasons should we stay up this year.....or stay at Swansea with an enhanced reputation from his success with us and have a chance at being a Premier League starter inside 12 months. It's a no brainer I'm afraid.
We`re very lucky to have him for this crucial run-in. The idea that we have suddenly become a club on par with the rich boys of the Championship, I believe, is way off mark. The overriding feature of the Club that attracted our new owners was the structures put in place by PC. The Plan may have been tweaked but I don`t think it is dead.
If he remains injury free, by the end of the season we’ll be talking about a player who’s hit double figures at a championship level in just 3.5 month. On top of that he’s got Premier League experience and is looking likely to become a first team international very soon. He’s also available without Swansea being able to dictate the fee. Our chances of signing him are near enough zero. One thing I do believe though. I think it was a blessing that we didn’t get him in August. I think either way we’d have only had him for half a season. Granted we may have picked up more points but to lose Oli and Barnes in January could have sent us into free fall. Signing him now has given us the lift (and goals) that I think will see us safe.
the modern football fan is off its fcukin nut. on deadline day he was a player with zero championship experience, a handful of goals in Leagues 1 and 2 and nowhere near swansea's first team. literally 5 games later and people are talking about international call ups, premier league greatness and how we have no ambition because there's no chance we'll be able to sign him. crackers.
There are two sides to that argument, obviously. Had McBurnie joined in August and performed well then I agree that he would’ve probably left in January but I’d hazard a guess that we would be higher in the league if as predicted he scored goals from August to January. Depending on where in the league we were placed and with the new owners we may have seen an equally productive January but a different one player wise if say we were in with a chance of reaching the play offs, etc. It’s all hypothetical but I would’ve preferred to see a McBurnie on this form playing from August irrespective of what January brought as opposed to him joining and playing well now when our backs are/were well and truly to the wall.
Well done Oli. I know it's highly unlikely but I agree that it would be fantastic to sign him in the summer.
I think everyone is missing something here If we would have got Mcburnie in August our former coach would have played him up front on his own and his confidence would now be shot.
Or he might have scored his fair share playing up on his own, our former coach would still be our current coach and the majority of those currently hating his guts would still be singing "he's one of our own". Funny game, football.
