Having just spent 5 days admitted there, from A&E to a ward, I have to say without doubt that they go waaaay beyond their call of duty under extreme circumstances. People are very quick to criticize them, but from what I saw they deserve the hugest thanks for their outstanding care & service. I cannot thank them enough. From patients to visitors abusing staff for no reason was hard to see, how it's a nurse's fault the parking is a fiver is beyond me? They deserve our praise & RESPECT for a very difficult job. I salute you all.
I have been attending BDGH for more than 3 years as both out patient and an in patient with sepsis about 12 months ago. Nowt but the highest praise for the staff there. Deffo saved my life there.
Having spent six days in there a few years ago I concur completely. The staff, particularly the nurses, were absolutely fantastic.
Luckily I haven't had many dealings with the hospital, but when my daughter was born 5 years ago the care was excellent - the maternity ward was desperate for refurbishment but the staff and care was excellent.
Worked there, been a patient and had 6 operations there, got my Dad under their care at present, both kids born there. I know from experience on both sides how much pressure there is on the system, on individuals. The NHS exists, in my opinion, in an increasingly overmanaged and policy/procedural driven era. Never forget that those that care do so because it's in their make up to do so, it doesn't come from policy v12.4. Things go wrong, and will do so, when humans are dealing with humans, all with the same frailties and weaknesses, exacerbated when overstretched. We are lucky to have an NHS and even luckier to have a good hospital, not flawless (but which one is?), with wonderful people working in it. Don't take it for granted.
It would be even better if the underbelly of society didn’t try looking for any reason whatsoever to try and claim against it. What the front line staff there have to put up with is a ******* disgrace to a civilised society. As you can probably guess by my tone, my mum and my wife have about 60 years of nursing experience between them and are/have been treated like **** by a small minority of the Barnsley public and fucktard jobs for the boys number crunchers for the last third of those.
It's a great hospital - and over the last 18 years I have had cause to be grateful for it - for myself, and my late parents. It's not always been perfect - when my father was admitted for the last time before his death conditions on the ward were not ideal. My mother passed away there, and her final days could have been better as well. However, when my father did die, the Dermatology consultant (who had treated him for quite a few years) sent me a personal letter of condolence. I have had to seek treatment from A&E a few times over those years - and have always received first rate medical care. I hope no-one takes it for granted - I worked overseas for many years and know that such free medical facilities are the exception.
I think you'll find 99.9% of hospitals throughout the country are staffed with dedicated nurses and doctors that will do there upmost to help you it's just a pity this government will not pay them a proper wage for the work they do. I know we don't like the Blunts and the Pigs but the Sheffield hospitals are second to none having been going to Weston Park over the last 5 years with my wife there is no word in the dictionary that i can give in apresiation.
They gave me extra time with my mum - simply. Without going into detail any "healthcare" system in the world would have deemed her "uneconomic" to repair years ago. She was in a combination of hospital and rehabilitation for just under 6 months and has since "made it" for nearly 3 years to date. In that time she has seen one of her four grandkids married and made Christmases and birthdays we never thought she would. She/they have completely changed my political allegiances and made me realise what I actually work and pay taxes for. She/they have made me proud of this Country. I will pay whatever/sacrifice whatever for my kids to be able to say the same. I haven't had much use of it personally but hope to God it's there if I ever do
6.5% wage increase over 3 years but lose a day's holiday, or in laymans terms pay for your own wage rise. Absolute disgrace to the profession.
I know I have mentioned this numerous times, but I don't care. BDGH, and the SCBU in particular, saved my daughter's life as a baby and for that I'll be eternally grateful. Their care and compassion was priceless.
Couldn't agree more, spent the 1st 15 years of my daughters life living up there. We were on 1st name terms with the doctors and nurses and still in contact with some of them now, some even came to her 18th birthday party. She's 21 this year and going to make me a grandad in June(due to her illness her time frame for having kids has shortened dramatically). A day I never thought I would see but thanks to the help and care of both BDGH and the Sheffield hospitals she is fighting fit and can now lead a nearly normal life
