Then we cannot afford to fill the side with lowerleague punts in order to make a better fist of things at this level. The new owners have the means to make quality signings from now on without 'going crazy' so if they have any aspirations of success and premier footy anytime in Barnsleys future then this has to happen imho. Barnsley have never had the potential it has now, to not explore it, even sensibly, is pure folly. Que the 'its easy to spend someone elses money' replies......
If we continue with our current transfer policy then the best outcomes are yo yo club or perinnial strugglers
I like the policy of signing young hungry up and coming players. I think We have some players on our hands who will have good careers. The spreadsheet needs updating though. But if we scrap it totally I'm done I enjoy watching young players come here and develop even if they don't stay forever.
That's all fine but maybe spend a little more on young players with a bit more potential. We went even lower down leagues than we did to assemble the promotion team. Add in some experience, nobody wants a squad full of journeymen but a few older heads could help a lot.
All we have to do is keep hold of the ones who are good - that's where any additional money is best spent. I think that, overall, the system has worked very well indeed when it comes to signing players. The nonsense that we signed in the summer wouldn't look half so bad playing with Roberts, Scowen and Watkins, let alone the likes of Conor. Unfortunately, in the form we've used it so far, it doesn't allow us to actually build on the relatively strong foundations which it provides.
Total opposite.. can't stand it. It always was and still is, for me, the cheap option. If they want to play under 23s, then charge under 23s admission. People have been sold the cheap option, as a fairy story.. The king is in the altogether..
The issue is we do not have any foundations at all at the moment, we have sold them all, in one half season. Staying up this season is a big job, if we manage it, rebuilding a side from scratch again is another as that’s what’s needed..,,,,,again. We haven’t got lucky with any of the gambles this time.
Our experienced players are Gardner and hammill. I agree we need to look higher up the leagues Marcus maddison would have been a good buy
Think it' the only way we can live within our means as that was part of the plan. Or we could just blow loads of cash we haven't got and then cry poverty.
Football is no longer about living within your means though. It’s about having the most cash to buy the best players. Ultimately the teams with the best players will probably win the most games Totally fallen out of love with the game to be honest
We did some good business in the lower divisions and got carried away with it. It was a giant leap to think we could formulate a business plan around it and totally rebuild the team that way.
But we fished from the same pond even in this league we should have upped the players we were looking at. So you knew it wouldn't work at this level? Which players should we have been looking to sign? When Paul heckingbottom was in charge he said himself we cannot afford proven championship players so we have to give players a chance to make a name for them self at this level.
Or getting in a load of debt like 90% of clubs in this league are. Doesn't always work though look at Birmingham spent a fortune and still *****.
Agree regarding Maddison but he wouldn't have come cheap, Peterborough always get top dollar for their players.
Agree although he was transfer listed in the summer after he wouldn't sign a new deal. Since then he has signed one so would cost alot more.
Fishing from a pond rather than the sea means a limited supply of large fish. We were lucky enough to hook some decent sized ones e.g. Conor but more often than not we caught tiddlers than needed throwing back. It also depends on the bait you use. If you don't stick something tempting on the hook the big 'uns either won't go for it or slip off the hook before you land them, especially if there are lots of other anglers fishing with more tempting bait.. Also constantly returning to the same small pool means the supply of decent sized fish eventually goes down especially if more anglers are turning up each time. Time to cast our line further afield perhaps and also get some better bait?
Well we caught Davies, winnall, mawson,Roberts,Conor, scowern, watkins,George Williams, watkins, yiadom, pinnock all from that pond so I wouldn't say we did too bad. if you pull 12k home fans and cannot afford the better bait you are a little limited in what you can attract but when we got the bigger fees we should have gone for quality over quantity I named one further up who I would have liked to see us sign.
