....MOTM (against Besiktas) it made me think....... We could start a trend for voting something other than a player as MOTM.. For example, we have occasions where the corner flag has saved more of our wayward shots than the opposition goalkeeper surely a worthy contender after one or two lacklustre performances. . Anyone got any other suggestions for potential MOTM?
Given that your first comment was that Bayern had done that, I’d say Bayern started the trend... Seems pretty demoralising and petulant either way
How so? Bayern won 3-1 on the night and 8-1 on aggregate. I think it was that the cat played a big part in the night as the match had to be stopped until the cat left the pitch, and no indictment of the players. Can't see it was either demoralising OR petulant just a bit of fan banter.
Toby Tyke once won MOTM at Oakwell many years ago. The club told the sponsor that he couldn’t do that as he had to choose a player. The sponsor told the club that he was told he got to choose the motm and Toby’s antics was far more entertaining than anything he’d seen in 90 minutes. Toby got the champagne but I don’t think it was announced.
In general it could be a great deal of fun and - and a great way for the fans to communicate with the players / club / football. For instance when the players have all played **** - we vote for Norman Rimmington. When the manager takes of our best player - we all vote for the player taken off. When the best player is on the bench - we vote for him even though he's not on the pitch. When we do see an outstanding display by an opposition player we vote for them- (One or two performances spring to mind - usually goalkeepers! -) When a player gets sent off unjustifiably we vote for them. When the ref hands the game to the opposition we vote for the ref: When connor scores a hatrick for Villa and we loose we vote for the former player we shouldn't have sold. However - I can't see the club playing ball - it doesn't match the commercial nature of the mom award which is all about sponsors - and if the club named the ref the man of the match the FA would probably fine us. Great idea - but we don't live in that world anymore.
