Booked all those bands at the Club I used to help run in Donny. Ponders End was led by John Parr who wrote St Elmos Fire. Also remember "The Uncool Dance Band " and my favourites " Squealer". Lead chanter with the latter had a really dry sense of humour. Used to open up by saying " it's great to be back." When his guitarist said " we've never played here before", he'd say " oh is it that long."? Used to introduce one song by saying " this is a love ballad I have written for my girlfriend. Unfortunately she doesn't like it. It's called I love you so much, that I can't sh*t properly. Hope you enjoy it."
Amsterdam bar one Friday then following Friday beer cellar Sheffield and club turns Black Abbott’s with Russ on the drums,Paul Shane, absolutely brilliant turns around then.New road club New Year’s Eve in the old days open doors at 7 7.30 it was full.Them were the days.
If I remember Wayne worked as sales advisor in " Music Ground" a musical instrument store in Doncaster. Used to wear distinctive white braces. Always has a smile on his face and just lived to play his guitar. A great lad.
Has anybody got footage of Famous Dead live at Meadowhall circa 1995. Was on a show called "Music & Movies"? On YTV a young-ish (about 30) Peachy was on lead guitar.
BBC Radio 2 DJ and presenter Ken Bruce does a Monday to Friday mid-morning show with a feature called " Tracks of my years". A personality is invited to name certain music tracks that have had an influence on their life down the years. Next weeks guest is Doncaster's John Parr who we know wrote " St Elmo's Fire" and fronted Donny band " Ponders End". Be very interesting to hear what he asks to be played.
Probably more to do with memories rather than quality of the band getting pissed on cider, fingering lasses behind Spar etc ad Infinitum.
I remember The Gents from the Wombwell Reform Club days and Def Leppard. I saw Def Leppard a fews day before they went to the US. The best band I saw at the Reform was called Bliss. The leader was Martin Bliss who went on the better things than the club circuit.
I was member of the Tracky Club from 68-82. We had some reight neets on Friday's and Saturday's. The Garages Christmas Eve do in the club was legendary.
Ah, youth ......Remember nights at Staincross WMC, Grimethorpe Miners, Birdcage and that club opposite Slazengers that's now houses.......what was it called! Amongst others.......
yeah, didn't it get renamed Benders before it got knocked down.........wouldn't get away with that today
Just listening to Ken Bruce show and he's got John Parr picking his favourite songs. He just mentioned that he was in Bitter Suite before he had a hit. Didn't know that. Must have seen him, unless he had left the band by the early 80s.
