You don't need to go to EVERY game to know what's happening at your club. You keep saying "barely go" without knowing how often someone is actually going.
Well if you go back and read through all comments you’ll see I’m responding to Dragon Tykes comments that he rarely goes
He said he rarely goes and even if he goes regular it makes no difference to the fact that you can’t comment on a game of football you don’t watch, doesn’t matter if it’s 1 game or 10
He doesn't say he rarely goes, that's your interpretation. You weren't just devaluing his opinion about the games he hadn't watched either.
Much as my opinion differs from @Dragon Tyke's his initial posts on this thread related to aspects of the matchday experience and how likely or not they were to increase support. Surely in this regard the opinion of an occasional or infrequent supporter is absolutely pertinent and dare I say it if anything more relevant than that of someone who attends every game anyway. For me it's all about the nature of the opinion expressed. As I say, DT's comments on this subject seem perfectly valid to me but if he were to comment on the work rate of Gardner vs Potts on a game he didn't attend then I'd take that with a pinch of salt. To dismiss the opinions of occasional supporters out of hand regardless of the subject or context seems to be throwing the baby out with the bathwater.
But how do you take the comments of someone who says the club shouldnt spend any effort on improving the off the pitch matchday experience when they say they rarely go and nothing the club does off (or on) the pitch will change that The problem was instead of a constuctive discussion about what should be done off the pitch - someone who doesnt go says we shouldnt make any improvements. He is of course entitled to that opinion but it is an annoying way to hijack a thread
Right, let's get things straight about opinions. My mate and another lad I know are both blind. They both attend home and away games. Neither can see what's going on so rely on the matchday commentary provided by the club's, so in reality they have the same "view" as someone sitting at home listening to the game. Would I tell them they haven't seen the game so can't have an opinion? Would I buggery.
As I say, my opinion and that of DT differ on this as on most things. I find his negativity about possible matchday improvements disappointing but I'd like to think he's in a minority and that the club will make progress in this area regardless. What doesn't sit well with me is that rather than arguing against his views some people have chosen to attack the number of games he attends as if that renders his opinion invalid. As far as hijacking a thread goes, maybe we should be celebrating the fact that he seems to have finally found the reply button rather than blindly clicking "Post New Thread" every time something pops into his head. This has to be the least supportive supportive post ever. I'm no Voltaire.
My position is that I started watching the Reds at 15 years old in 1974. I went to virtually every home game and many away particularly in the late 70s. I had a season ticket from 1994/95 to 2013/14 except one year. I finally gave it up the last relegation. I stopped as it was making me miserable and I was becoming more disillusioned with Football in general. Since then I've been a handful of times and yes, I went to the playoff final which was outstanding. In truth though I haven't really missed it which to me is sad. I admire the fans who attend games either regularly or occasionally and this is not a sleight upon them. The point I'd like to make is that I don't comment on the specific games as I don't feel qualified to do so. My information mainly comes second hand from my friend at work who is a ST holder and what I can glean from the media. I comment on general matters relating to football and BFC in particular but not the games. That's only the way I deal with it and not meant as a criticism of any other view. BTW, yes it still bothers me when we concede a first minute goal or a last minute sickener as I still want the club to succeed P.S. Also £36 for a second division match... really ?
It's possible to watch online this season so that isn't really true. Granted you don't get the same perspective on how players do but you can watch the game at home all the same. Fairly sure DT does this as well.
This thread has developed into a strange one. I think it goes without saying we want a winning football team. As stated, every fan wants this and in fact there lies a problem. Every team cant win, but its true we want a winning team. However we want more. In yesteryear we had a match experience much different to todays. The Generation A-B-C era had different wants and needs. Move forward and the Millenials want something more and different. We have the Generation Z era who are born with am iPad, Iphone etc etc in their hand. Who expect wifi everywhere. Who expect a bigger wider experience. Today's (and tomorrows fans) want a different experience. We need to manage the evolution and response to todays and tomorrows fans needs. Its long overdue and i for one welcome any actions to bring people in earlier and get them to leave later. I wonder what the demographic was at the fans forum because of we arent listening to what the youth of today and the fans of the future want then we might not even have a team let alone a winning one
Exactly this... Winning is a given as been the main goal. As a club, we need to grow as well. We can modernise while still holding our traditions intact.
But it isn't pointless if it drives up revenue and increases the budget available to spend on improving what happens during the 90 minutes. Why is this so difficult for folk to grasp? It's far from pointless and is managed by a completely different department to those looking after on field challenges.
