I used to play for em but wouldn’t have played against Tarn lads. Used to clog anyone that ran past me. I was more Paul McGugan that Paul Futcher.
It was Steve cooper that scored before Currie got the winner , deehan and mad Mel didn't arrive till a month or two later down the line , I think Winnie was in temporary charge for this one, sithi.
Malcolm had the reputation of being a hard case on the pitch. I was on the way to Northallerton on business with my boss who like me, was a Red. He wanted some fags, so we called into a small roadside cafe at the side of the A1. Seeing as we'd stopped and we were running early, we decided to have a quick coffee. Slap bang in front of the serving area was big Malcolm with a lady, who we assumed was his wife. On the way out, we couldn't leave without letting him know how we'd appreciated his efforts in the famous Red shirt. He told us " the pleasure was all mine- a truly great Club." Turns out he was on his way North visiting family. He was originally from Newcastle and I have to say, having met him that day, my perceptions of him altered. Seemed a really nice affable guy, unless of course you were an opponent on the field or John Deehan, off it that is.!
