Looking back to season 2001-02 under Nigel Spackman and then Steve Parkin, and then season 2013-14 under Dave Flitcroft and then Danny Wilson... the comparisons are there for all to see arent they when we look at this season.

For a start we've changed our manager/coach again which we did in both of those other seasons, although the difference this time is our boss walked before he was pushed, and he would surely have been pushed sooner rather than later. I know this idiotic 'plan' idea is mostly to blame and what do you expect when we get rid of quality for what we think is great money, but we then spend little of it on poorer and dare I say it garbage replacements. Especially when we also insist on an under 23 rule on players, this for me is one of the most ludicrous parts of this plan, because Im guessing they must have a sell on value for if or when we do want to cash in on them.

Who thinks when we look at our 16 players, that we have a worse squad right now compared to those other 2 seasons. We've got less to be honest when it comes to quality and confidence and goals, and an all round incapability of looking like we can win games.

I honestly think that team would batter our current one. Cywka would prob get a hat trick from anywhere on the pitch given his shooting and our keeping.

The last season that happened was 2 years ago when we got promoted so it's not really a good comparison.

You forgot to add Mellis lol. Remember him and Cywka both went to Blackpool and didnt last the whole season there!. Our biggest two losses were Steele & Co'g, who else did we lose and really miss for the start of season 2014-15 ?.

I think Wilson had more than long enough when he got the job before christmas that season, whereas Jose has only been given a fraction of that time.

Ok Ive Wikipeed this, and this 2013-14 squad really does bring back nightmares when I study it a bit more... are we really as bad as this squad, at this moment in time ?.

Gk: Steele, Butland (loan), Pollitt (loan),
Def: Kennedy, Cranie, Nyatanga, M'Voto, Wiseman, Golbourne, Hassell, Ramage (loan), Hunt (loan),
Mid: Dawson, O'Brien, Cywka, Mellis, Lawrence, Woods, McCourt, Etuhu, Perkins, Frimpong, Digby, Shea (loan),
Str: O'Grady, Scotland, Jennings, Dagnall, Rose, Noble-Lazarus, Proschwitz (loan), Tudgay (loan), Pederson (loan),

Warning, the following posts in this thread might contain some shocking comments about the 2001-02 season and the squad and a bloke nickanmed 'spanker', I think you know who I mean lol.

How many of those players would you have in the current team? For me it'd be:

    GK: Steele
    DEF: Cranie, Bobby
    MID: Dawson, McCourt, Perkins, O'Brien
    STR: O'Grady

I've not considered loan players. Actually, O'Grady often drifted out to the left didn't he. He'd fit right into Jose's plans.

Yes Id deffo put Luke Steele in goal today, he was more than decent to be honest and it was a shame to lose him. (but is the modern day version of Steele as good as when we first signed him, like in the Cup win away at Liverpool etc).
O'Brien was always a trier for me, and so were messrs Dawson, Woods, & McCourt etc, but they simply werent good enough despite their effort. But Cywka & Mellis could have done much better, and while they might have a point if they say it was hard being in such a crap squad etc, they also let themselves down with a lack of effort. And dont even get me started on Manu Pingpong.

There's certainly one parallel between this season and the 2001/02 relegation. Spackman had a fetish for midfielders and Hecky has collected No.10s when he doesn't even use them.

Ok this is/was the dreaded relegation squad of 2001-02. And goodness me lads this was and still is an appalling squad isnt it when you look at it now, even in the present day!.

    Gk: Miller, Marriott, Ghent,
Def: Barker, Regan, Morgan, Chettle, Crooks, O'Callaghan, Kay, Gibbs, Salli (injured!),
Mid: Barnard, Ward, Donovan, Neil, Lumsdon, Dixon, Barrowclough, Hayward, Gorre, Christie,
Str: Dyer, Sheron, Rankin, Fallon, Betsy, Scothern, Bertos,

Nigel the spanker Spackman may have been a decent looking appointment to begin with in the early 00's, but he actually set us back didnt he and he ruined all of our post-Bassett promotion and play off hopes.

It's hard to judge because the league is a lot worse. The year we stayed up and Peterborough went down, both of us would have been comfortably mid table. We seemed to be winning a lot of games and hardly got out of the bottom three under Flicker that second half of the season whereas now, we're not winning at all and only had a brief spell in the bottom three.

Under Wilson, we went to the odd place and picked up a result whilst also winning the odd game at home. That's not happeneing this season.
