If we are to stay up, which of the current players are capable of allowing us to compete next season?

This is my take. I’m not including the loanees, Yiadom, Bradshaw or Hammill as I can’t see any of them been here next season.

    Important first team players

    Jackson
    Lindsay
    Pinnock

    Useful first team players

    Moore
    Isgrove
    Thiam

    Players worth keeping
    Cavare (Squad)
    Fryers (Squad)
    Potts (Rotation)
    Knasmullner (Rotation hopefully)
    Mallan (Rotation?)
Hedges (Welsh international, showed glimpses, Squad player)
    Pearson (Squad)

    Must go

Davies (Don’t think he’ll stay as a sub)
    Townsend
Moncur (I like him but it’s not working)
    Mowatt
Pinillos (Fryers is the better back up)
    Mcgeehan (Loan out)
    McCarthy (Loan out)
    Bird (Loan out)
    Brown (Loan out)

Appallingly, after a full 2 windows of recruitment that leaves us with only 3 players capable of being definite first team regulars at this level next season. Of those 3 players more often than not only 2 will play at once.

We then have Moore, Isgrove and Thiam who I believe would be good players in a better side and at minimum useful over a season.

We then have 7 players who we could really take or leave. None are capable of being definite first team regulars and you wouldn’t build your team around any of them.

That leaves us with a squad of 13 players with only 6 that id be happy to see start come August.

Obviously all this is pointless if we don’t stay in this league.

Work to be done. As things stand I’m not sure Morais is the man to do it.

Maybe when the overseas analyst comes in full time we’ll see things improve.

200 likes and I’ll tell you my squad for if we go down.

    Exciting times.

    COYR.

Never saw anything in morsey that would have improved our squad at that time , too slow and bang average . If by some miracle we stay up the new owners have to spend some serious money . We’ll get nowhere without some investment !

The same Morsy that kept Scowen out of the team? Excellent defensive midfielder with a fair bit of bite. We really dropped the ball when we inexplicably failed to capitalise on the option to purchase. Huge faux pas.

Opinions eh , if we’re serious about progressing to the next level we should be looking above players like morsey , and if I’m right SM only played when JS was injured or suspended and was never a regular starter .

JS wasn’t even a regular starter in central midfield in League 1. In fact he only became a regular central midfield starter after Hourihane and Morsy left when he was paired alongside James. It’s worth noting that JS often play right midfield and even right back, a fact overlooked by many.

I don't agree, he was playing well in a squad that was on the fringes of the playoffs. In our current position you could tie his laces together and he'd still be our best central midfielder

The three you name as Important are a damning indictment on the recruitment strategy.

I agree on one out of 3 at a push

Not difficult to be our best midfielder now due to the fact we don’t have anyone even half decent in that position !

Trouble is, some of them on your 'must go' list cost a big chunk. You are effectively saying we should be writing their cost off or taking a big loss?

    IF we stay up:

    Important first team players
Davies (with an old head to push him)
    Jackson
    Lindsay
    Pinnock
    Isgrove

    Useful first team players
    Moore
    McCarthy
    Potts

    Players worth keeping
    Fryers (Squad)
    Knasmullner (Rotation hopefully)
    Mallan (Rotation?)
Hedges (Welsh international, showed glimpses, Squad player)
    Pearson (Squad)
    McGeehan
    Thiam
    Pinillos

    Must go
    Townsend
Moncur (I like him but it’s not working) same here
    Mowatt
    Bird
    Brown
    Cavare

In your must go brown is a 18 year old kid surely worth another loan out and cavare looks miles ahead of pinillios for me if he can keep his head.

I think for a fair amount of our players the step up to the championship was too large. Just like it possibly would’ve been for our previous stars that have all been sold on.

As much as I don’t want to see us relegated and go back to League 1, I feel like a season (or possibly 2) could be beneficial to our players in their development. But then a lot of the players don’t have the winning mentality with us at the minute so we may need to clear out, who knows.

There’s still a decent amount of time for us to stay up this season however, as the weeks have gone by, I’ve lost more and more hope.

    Dross ???!!!
I just hope our players don’t read this rubbish.

Other than the goalkeeper - would any of the Millwall players get in the Barnsley side ???
    They were absolutely shocking.
But still managed to win over an extremely disorganised Barnsley team.

Nothing against Brown mate. Just fear he may be another Danny Rose. I'd agree with a half season loan where he gets decent game time, then take it from there.

Cavare CAN'T keep his head and looks unfit and uninterested.

    Wrong.

Our best runs of performances last season came with all three of Hourihane, Scowen and Morsy playing in a very fluid central midfield (4 wins from 5 in December) and with Hourihane and Scowen in tandem (5 wins from 6 in Aug/Sep). The one constant? Scowen.

Ok. As I said above, Scowen often played wide right. Just because Scowen, Morsy and Hourihane all appear on a Googled teamsheet doesn’t mean that all three were playing in central midfield.

I think that people are blinded by the fact that we could so badly do with a Scowen now and are comparing him to what we presently have at our disposal. He’s an excellent player and I’m not suggesting anything to the contrary but he was behind Hourihane and Pearson and then Hourihane and Brownhill in League 1 and again in the Championship behind whoever else in his preferred position.

Looked good against villa away and Fulham before he lost his head. Pinnilos had a mare yesterday and hasn't looked good apart from Burton at home. All opinions though if we do go down jose should go.

Disorganised being the key word the manager needs to sort that out, agree with your comments

We will be in L1 where Bradshaw and Moncur will shine. I can’t see any radical surgery needed for a L1 promotion push. By the time we came back up some of our other punts may have developed. If we stay up then yes there are only a couple of players with keeping.
