apparentlya woman from Pudse has taken offence at a letter from the AA because it mentioned the AA ‘man’ so they are calling them something else.
Have people really nothing better to do with their lives?
Anyway got to go , just got to get an email off to Avon :D

If it wete not so serious...i would just laugh.
Recently i was doing a bit of loft clearing and came across my childhood enid blighton books...in one of them it told the story of the 3 golliwogs...their names (and i cant put this anywhere) were..."n###er#, "w#g" and "s###o"!!!
So will our legal system now track down her surviving family and drag them some prolonged litigation action?!!
On a serious note...like most people i am vehemently opposed to racism but most of the do gooders these days are just trying to be pc....to the point of madness.
I dont know the "doll" guy from adam....but i still have friends who have the golly...and honestly didnt know (as i didnt) that it is found racist.
In fact i also found my jam jar figures (robinsons i think) and collected the musical insrument figures until i had tbe set.

When I was a kid I didn't realise that they were meant to be a depiction of a black person. (1960s)

I’ve not seen this story so I don’t know if there is more to it but if you think about it, why should a letter automatically say man if women also work for them? It would take AA the work of 2 seconds to change the standard letter. I’m starting to think that it’s not so much that ‘it’s really getting stupid’ now that companies are being asked to changes, as it’s surprisimg at how far spread it really is where the word ‘man’ is used automatically. It’s a far sadder place that men are posting on random boards upset that a company that hires both males and females are expected to not just write ‘man’ on everything than it is that a company is supposed to change one word in a letter to acknowledge that they now have women working for them too.

My test is always this: if the standard now (so women working for them and using a gender neutral term such as ‘person’) was how is always was and suddenly the company changed all of its letters etc. to just say men out of the blue, would that be acceptable? In this case, no it obviously wouldn’t so that should show that continuing to do so is wrong really.

Totally with JamDrop on this. To continue to tolerate inbuilt - sometimes even subconscious - biases and refuse to evolve the way we behave or express ourselves means that more serious and insidious discrimination (sexual harassment, etc) will continue to exist. I know we were all brought up in a different age and may not think there is anything wrong intended in certain actions or expressions, but I think the least we can do is to listen when they are pointed out to us. It's not to say we can't have a sense of humour or anything, but it's 2018, for God's sake. Respect, and all that.

Sorry JD , I can't agree I do know what you mean but its getting to the stage where far too much time will be lost by firms worrying about terminology, how long before somebody in the street gets a lecture because the said call a policeman instead of a police person?
In the AA case ONE woman complained and they have to start altering stuff, and they will do it from now junking/wasting loads of literature that they could just have run down, because thats the way it works these days. The thing is the AA already have female mechanics, so it didn't put them off did it. Building is seen as a male dominated world but there are female builders, they didn't think oooo I can't do that did they?
And why does it always seem to be a ms that complains,if Avon keep banging on about Avon Ladies it doesn't even enter my head to complain.
Nope I know people joke about the snowflake generation but thats the way we are heading.

Its a very small but loud minority who look for perceived offence and shout loudly about it.
Its almost always someone seeking offence on the behalf of someone else.

Its become worse since the advent of social media as these **** nuggets can find each other easier and shout loudly.

The overwhelming majority of people i suspect dont actually give two ***** if someones black white man or woman.

Identity politics is the new snake oil.

Along the same lines, I think there are a disproportionate number of dog and cat food adverts on tv whereas I can’t recall seeing any for rabbits.
You see them energetically bounding about with their perfect teeth and glossy coats, what about some eye candy for my young uns dwarf lop?
That’s it, I’m off to cause criminal damage on the next bank holiday.

Sorry North Yorks but you come across as an unreconstructed male chauvinist. Everything you say gives it away. “It doesn’t even enter my head to complain” - we’ll its right there in your head or you wouldn’t have even brought it up in jest. I’m with Jamdrop, it’s not acceptable for an organisation such as the AA to send out such literature in this day and age. Get with it NY.

That’s a rubbish reason. If nothing else, they are sending out inaccurate information and it should be changed based on that alone. I’m not sure how much time would be spent ‘worrying about terminology’, yes there’s the initial job of updating out of date stuff but is it really that hard or time confusing in the future? On new stuff no-one could ever be confused about what to write as it would be very strange to start writing ‘man’ when you know women work there, it would just be standard to write something that includes both. As for Avon, do the company themselves refer to them as ‘Avon ladies’? I know they did in the past but I only ever see them called representatives now.

Edit: also, who says call a policeman? Or even police person? Don’t you just say call the police? It would be a bit weird to specify policeman, I don’t know anyone who would say that.

Sorry, we will have to agree to disagree on that one, for me there are too many people out there just looking for something to get 'offended' about, and despite what you see its escalating and that takes companies focus off other things

why because I get annoyed with folk looking for stuff to complain about? , I'm actually far from a chauvinist, doesn't matter to me whether it says man or woman in any letter, I just look at the service on offer and crack on, rather than assume folk can't think for themselves

I know we’re are not going to change each other’s mind and I don’t know where you work but if your company said ‘a woman will see you in a moment’ or ‘I’ll just pass you along to the woman’ and then you had to come out and deal with the customer, wouldn’t that make you feel a bit daft? And if it happened every time and in official communication not just once as a mix up. Wouldn’t it make more sense for them to just say ‘someone’? I’m not sure what focus it takes off other things but it’s just a one time update and then it should come as natural after that.

I’m not sure you see the irony here NY but what you are doing here is the very definition of looking for something to complain about. As far as I know, and correct me if I am wrong, you neither work for AA or are a woman. You have less reason to complain about this than the woman who complained in the first place, at least she is at least one of the two. Complaining that someone is complaining about something that affects them, when their complaint doesn’t affect you at all is quite funny.
