Just seen on their FB page that they've now closed down. Not overly surprised. Been a couple of times and it's been empty. Last time I went was well over a year ago. Seen it mentioned on here that it takes an age to get your food served. Credit to them for trying to bring something half decent to Barnsley. Just a shame our towns folk would prefer £2 a pint Carling and a pastie from Greggs. You have to wonder where the spending customers will come from when the Glass Works is complete.
Think the fact that it was terrible rather than the pricing was why it failed. I gave it 3 chances and on each occasion there was either bad service, or below par food. The Supper club which looks to open there soon has potential!
Although I've not been for well over a year I wasn't massively impressed with the portion sizes (small) or the food itself. I do remember it taking a while to get served too, when it wasn't all that busy.
Was in there after the game on Saturday and really enjoyed it , food was ok and service was good too . We mentioned why was it so empty on a Saturday ? There were maybe a dozen folk in . Hopefully something appealing will take its place , decent eating places are few and far between in town tbh ! UTR
that is the problem right there, i just wouldn't even consider going into Barnsley if we wanted to go out for a meal. Same when we are going out with the kids, cinema? Sheffield, same for bowling then we are eating after. Shopping? Meadowhall or Cortonwood, we will drive into York for the day too. Having not taken the car on Saturday it was the first time i had actually walked through town in months when we decided to go for a drink after the game. Have to see what the new development brings, but it will need a massive shift in attitude, Barnsley town centre isn't even on my radar at the moment,
Sometimes I think people just sort of "assume" there's nowhere decent to eat in Barnsley, without actually looking into it. Partly that's the fault of the restaurants themselves who could improve their marketing. I know it's a matter of taste, but try one or more of the following: - Lemon Tree Puccinis Pasha Secret Italian Bistro Romans Passion Food One Momento Aroma Bar (themed nights) Not a huge selection, but decent in my opinion
We've tried most of these and tbf they're all ok and compared to a few years ago there is much more choice . The problem is , my Mrs and daughter are not going into the centre of Barnsley on a match day or on any other weekend really because basically its a bit rough . Going out comes as a full package not just the restaurant we are visiting .
I know what you mean but I go into Barnsley to eat with my wife, and other couples, all the time. Seen plenty of knobs but never had a hint of any "difficulties". We tend to sit in whatever restaurant we're in though, rather than go "rarned tarn", then get a taxi home. My point however, is that it's wrong, in my opinion, to just assume that Barnsley has no decent eateries without actually looking into it further. By the way, add Chilli (Indian and Grille) to my previous list. And Pinocchio's at a stretch.
Pretty gutted that grill pit has gone personally, I didn't go that often but when I was in town I would always go there for some grub as every time I went we always had good food and good service and I didn't think it was too badly priced either.
I hope the new Town Centre is going to reinvigorate the area but im not holding my breath . I love Pinocchio's but they do take the 'rustic Italian' a little too literally . Leo's a good lad though and a red .
Read reviews before and small portions seemed to get mentioned a lot. No point overpaying on food that isn't going to fill you up. If they are slow at serving, people aren't going to waste their time. Jock's Cavern is always packed, so you'd think Grill Pit would be as you can finish your meal and go upstairs. If people are bypassing the food and going straight to Jock's Cavern, you have a problem.
I must admit, when i'm up, I try and take my mum out and finding a good place is really difficult. I know I live in London and i'm completely spoilt for choice even on my doorstep, and when travelling I always try and source good authentic local restaurants, whether Rome, Indonesia or Tallinn.... I love trying to eat like the locals. I ended up taking my mum to Black Swan for Sunday lunch which was about a 20 mile drive and it was ok, not terrible, not fantastic. Rob Royd and Beeston House are maybe the best for a treat, but not been for a while, and the Royal Spice at darton is pretty decent, though not quite enough kick for me. As for trying to find an authentic Italian that serves a representative regional set of dishes, Barnsley is really poorly served. I'd say hands down the worst Italian i've ever had was pinocchios. I saw the same smooth tomato cream sauce (maybe Heinz related) put on many different plates and the pasta was overcooked by at least 10 minutes (though its not common to find an Italian anywhere that doesn't overcook pasta to cater for british "taste". I don't expect food in the area to be Michelin quality or like a 100 year old Roman Osteria, but volume over quality seems to be the order of the day. There must surely be enough demand for a restaurant to up the game in the area.
That place is really popular, so I can't see it shutting. If they own both, they could have used JC to get people in GP. Grill Pit might have got more in if for example you got a free drink voucher in there for every X amount of money spent. So if you spend twenty quid you get two free drinks in Jock's Cavern. You'd get the JC crowd more likely to eat before they get there and the Grill Pit crowd get to try out upstairs and if they enjoy it they will stay longer and spend their own cash.
Sounds like Jocks Cavern is going nowhere. And the replacement to the Grill Pit is going to be The Supper Club. https://www.facebook.com/TheSupperClubBarnsley/
Perception is problem, I admit I haven't looked at all if there was anywhere. It just never crossed my mind.
You've hit the nail on the head. Or they prefer to go and sit in a shopping centre 12 miles down the M1.
