In past seasons the prospect of relegation kept me awake at night - caused panic attacks - loss of appetite - acute depression eetc. This season the prospect of relegation doesn't bother me much - not sure why.
Seen too many to be arsed, to be honest. Couple of days of pain and despite the ribbing from rivals, they're not really bothered either. We'll still have a club, the fixtures will come out as usual, the world turns....
I won't be losing any sleep if we get relegated: it's a perspective thing. I would prefer however that we weren't in this perilous position, that we could once again become an established division 2 (championship) team: mediocrity is a lot easier to take when it's an affordable experience. Because as you age and take on other responsibilities of life and family, which division our football team plays in is not that important really in the grand scheme of things. So long as you can still get out for a few hours on a Saturday and have a couple of beers, who cares. Of course we would all like to remain at this level but if we don't, the world will still turn and we'll be back soon enough.
I’m not actually arsed, either if we got promotion or were relegated i think I’d feel the same, does it matter which league we play in in the grand scheme of things, it probably used to matter a lot more to me 30 years ago but right now I don’t care. League one clubs might not charge each other £40 to watch a chuffing game of football
Before relegation threatened the club's very existence. Now we know that we aren't going bankrupt it doesn't really matter in the same way. I am almost excited about the prospect of us in League One next year. Blackburn were awful but they have had a great year. Mallan,, Moncur, Thiam, Bradshaw, Potts, MxGeehan etc could walk that league.
Sometimes I think the same, but I suspect it's just because I want this season to be over and done with. Also, as an eternal optimist, there's almost certainly a part of me which is assuming that we'd walk League 1 next season and come back much stronger. If and when we do go down, and once we've lost the first couple of games, only then will it actually hit me. This is a relatively well-walked path!
The last time I was really that worried about relegation was the Flicker great escape season. It seemed like there was an amazing unity in the small squad, with everyone fully behind Flicker. Players ran to celebrate with him when we scored, etc. When it came to the final day away at Huddersfield, it would have been a real sickener to go down after everything we'd done since xmas. When we survived it felt almost as good as a promotion. Last relegation was a damp squib and most were resigned to it. I was this time until last weekend. I'm now confused as to how I feel!
We've been there before and beyond and survived and come back and made the top tier and I'm so honoured to go to so many Wembley/play offs - bring it on - after all it's summat we pay to watch not summat we have done to us - memories - you've gotta have been there to tell the story - my grandkids luv it when I tell em I was outside the ponty shouting Iley out
That’s probably what Sunderland fans thought at the end of last season. Remember we struggled in our first season back down last time.
Last time down we had a bunch of crap players, right now we have a decent young squad who probably needed a bit more seasoning. If Blackburn and Rotherham can turn it around so dramatically then we certainly can.
I think having the new owners who have stated that they are taking a long view and that relegation this season is just a small blip has reassured me. In years past relegation might have meant selling all our players, tightening the belt or even worse.
