There appeared to be absolutely no communication between Yiadom and Davies and that’s the cause of Bolton’s second goal. The cross should’ve been goalkeeper’s ball all day long due to the sheer proximity of the ball to Davies, to the net and the complete lack of danger. It’s a massive mistake that has cost us again regardless of who people want to pin the blame on. They’re both at fault, imho.
Just to explain my throw away comment, I'm in the ground from an hour before kick off setting the Patrick Cryne flag up in the west stand. Because of this I see the keepers come out to warm up - they usually come out well before the rest of the players. Over the season Adam Davies has usually been quite upbeat, laughing, joking, smiling, signing the odd autograph etc. Yesterday was very different, he looked well pissed off about something. He also kept getting hugs and pats on the back from the other players, as if something bad had happened. This was all in the warm up when the ground was largely empty - as the players came out for the match he looked fine. As far as his performance is concerned, I think he did ok and made a couple of decent saves, including a great one in the first half. As for the goal, the cross was deflected by one of our lads, wrong footing both Davies and Yiadom. Davies obviously didn't come for the cross as without the deflection it would have been too far out. After the deflection neither player reacted quick enough. Poor goal once again.
Weird innit. It’s all Davies fault yet week after week we keep creating chances that don’t get taken yet when the other team gets back in it’s always Davies fault. If Kiefer could finish half chances like McBurnie does half this argument would be irrelevant.
Not sure anyone's said it's 'all his fault'. You can spot weaknesses all over the park. Even our better players have their flaws.
As part of the goalkeepers union, I don't criticise goalkeepers easily. Mistakes happen, we're only human, but Davies is consistently NOT doing things that ANY goalkeeper should be doing with triviality - that being commanding his box and making decisions that ultimately win football games. When I was playing on Saturdays with Nostell and various pub teams in Barnsley on a Sunday, one thing was 100%. If a ball came into the 6 yard box, it was mine. If it came into the 12 yard box (penalty spot and in) then I'd make a decision, but generally it was mine. This isn't difficult - it's catching a ball. One thing and one thing only stops a competent keeper doing this and that is confidence. Davies hasn't become a bad keeper overnight. This has been brewing for months and months, and I have to worry about the level of support and coaching that Davies is receiving for his seemingly inability to bounce back after making mistakes and continuing to exhibit tendencies shown by a 12 year old. Someone needs to have a word with him - we need him these next four games. We cannot afford to be mollycoddling a keeper with a confidence crisis, and thus ability crisis in the middle of a relegation dogfight.
But its goals conceded that have cost us most. If a professional team scores 2 goals it should win most of the time. Look how many games we've scored twice and failed to win.
Barnsley 2-2 Middlesbrough Barnsley 2-2 Bristol City Barnsley 2-2 Bolton Think that's it. 3 times in a season doesn't seem excessive Just checked the above three sides: Bolton 5 times: 3 draws, 2 losses Bristol 6 times: 5 draws, 1 loss Middlesbrough 3 draws, same as us
It’s not just the keeper though. It’s the whole of our defence that is dogshit hence why we keep shipping goals for fun. Can’t all be laid on Davies head. Part of the issue is probably he’s got no confidence in what’s in front of him. No one ever grumbled about him in our promotion season and last year. People who reckon he might be shipped out I can’t see it as he’s probably going to be a L1 keeper on Championship money next year so unless someone wants him he’s probably going to still be our no 1 next year.
Yeah but we signed a midfielder instead who is nowhere near fit enough to play. Swings & roundabouts.
I don't know what people think they are achieving by making these sort of comments at this stage of the season. We have no option but to play him. He's the only fit senior goalkeeper. Someone who's lost their confidence isn't going to get it back reading/hearing this load of *****. Imagine someone's sat behind you every day at work telling you you're rubbish at your job. Very few would perform better as a result of it.
