What gives any of us the right to live in this country? Having British parents doesn't seem to be one of the criteria.
And at this time the BBC decide to broadcast Enoch Powell’s odious “Rivers of Blood” speech. Being brought up in the 50’s I remember the racism that was common at that time and I’m ashamed of it. This government is more right wing than Thatcher’s and the sooner we’re rid of them the better.
You have a point about the higher echelons of the Civil Service. However, these people are cherry picked by Govt ministers. So in effect are simply doing as they are told.
I know lots of people who work at Leeds Uni, Who are highly qualified, who have taken work in other countries, due to the lack of any reassurances from the feckless idiots in the Home Office. One is my ex girlfriend.
There's a whole lot more to it, believe me. I'm in exactly the same boat as my wife is non-eu. I either have to come and work in the UK without her for a year, thus separating our small daughter from one of her parents for a year, or we can apply straight away if we can show a lump sum of £62,500 CASH in our bank account. Luckily, we have enough equity and investments to do this if push came to shove, but it would probably involve having to sell our home here in order to do it. All because they are worried that my wife, who is bilingual and holds a Master's degree and a raft of simultaneous translation and interpreting qualifications would be a burden on the taxpayer. In all honesty she's probably more employable than me, as I've worked for myself for the last 14 years, and got a 2.2 in my degree (well earned, may I add!)
She *could* be a burden to the tax-payer.... it will cost the government a lot to use her translation services!
Wow!! I assume you have lived abroad for many years? They really are pulling up the drawbridge. We burned our bridges selling up in the UK and retiring to Italy and were fully aware that, even though we are both UK citizens, born and bred, we would have problems if sometime in the future we wanted to move back (as if!) . Here in Italy we had to prove our ability to support ourselves but the household income threshold quoted was laughably low (to the point of being impractical if we wanted to eat as well as have a roof over our heads). No mention was ever made re savings but I suppose that was because we had bought a property here so we had collateral (albeit not cash and also susceptible to the whims of nature -'vis a vis' disappearing in a puff of dust due to the Earthquakes). Luckily we avoided that problem unlike many of our friends (Italians and migrants). Our 5 years Permesso di Soggiorno are almost up and in spite of doom and gloom warnings from some our commune have just told us to bring the current documents in with two 'Marca-di Bollo' stamps, 2 passport photos each and they will swap the forms whilst we wait to give us indefinite residency status.
The whole thing is so much more complicated. You have to prove you've been earning a minimum income threshold for 2 years, but the problem is this threshold is based on a London-based income, not someone in Barnsley. I didn't meet it despite being very comfortable in Barnsley, in decent employment with no debts and my American wife having plenty in the bank to sustain herself until she found work. They do not take into account any of your spouse's money, even if it's millions. The other way, as posted above, involves showing 62.5k cash, which we did not have. Regardless of the above, you can meet all the criteria and still be declined on unreasonable grounds at the whim of an immigration officer, and your appeal is useless because they deport you before it even comes around. It didn't matter to them with us that we had a child on the way who they were going to separate from a parent. My wife and I had to up sticks and move to Ireland, like many others I've met even in Barnsley, and lived and worked there for 2 years. Then her status technically changed to that of an EU resident and she was able to move back to Barnsley with me. It was an absolute nightmare of a process, but I tell you one thing, the south of Ireland is a lovely place with lovely people. We almost didn't come back, only family swung it.
Yes, that is absolutely ridiculous. This jack booted set of fascists we have in charge of the country need to be given the heave-ho. Sad thing is they are being supported by the majority of the press & to some extent the TV media too. Distract everybody by bringing up the anti-semitic picture again ... grief.
my wife is british jamaican and her mom and dad came over on the windrush voyage way back they worked their ass off here and have paid dues and demands, god bless my mom in law not here now but daddy is, i really hope we not going to go through the turmoil of our disjointed government crap. Time to sort the illegals and crap that are destroying our country and respect the people that built our country (well the midlands)
The problem isn’t civil servants wrongly applying government policy. The problem is civil servants correctly applying government policy. The Hostile Environment brought in by May has institutionalised and normalised racism. In past times Amber Rudd would certainly have resigned and possibly May. Where is the responsibility? The accountability? Whatever your politics the current government is both vicious and incompetent a lethal combination.
Isnt it the Labour party members who are banging the drum loudest about anti semitism? Given its tearing the party apart?
No the members know it’s a load of made up *****. It’s tbe blairite mps that are banging the drum. Time for them to jog on.
Id suggest otherwise. You only have to look at some of the ***** from a multitude of facebook groups that keep hitting the public eye from the 'ultra secret' palastine live to others open to tje general public. There seems to be an underlying trend that 'jew bating' and holocaust denial is acceptable under the current leadership. Unfortunatly its as common place within the far left as it is the far right.
The Labour Party isn't a far left party??? You are so far on the right you probably think Thatcher was a Socialist. You must be a bit lost with the BNP & UKIP on their arse.
I’d suggest you read the Daily Mail too much.... Labour is under Corbyn a centre left social Democratic Party as is prevalent throughout Europe. People spoon fed trickle down economics and Thatcherism think this is hard left. Corbyn’s version of Labour is to the right of every Labour Govt other than Blair/ Brown’s. Of course there are an occasional racist within Europe’s biggest political party. It reflects wider society unlike say the tories or UKIP where racism is the reason many of the people vote for them.
Its a bit of a leap from ,not liking Israel's treatment of Palestinians to holocaust deniers and anti Semitism
