That no one has really given us a hiding all season. Would that stand us in good stead for next season?
Yes. Whatever league we're in next season some experience is crucial to steady the younger players when things get tough. Does anyone think Lindsay would have made as many daft errors with Roberts by the side of him? I don't. Would Davies have had such a rotten season with Robbo in front of him for that matter? From what I've seen, the players are nowhere near as bad individually as some people are making out, which is borne out by the fact that nobody has stuffed us this season. However, chucking them all in together has been suicidal. Absolutely nobody with any experience except Hammill to guide them through the tougher parts of games. The sad thing is, it's not only been suicidal for the team, but possibly for some of their careers as well. Absolutely thrown to the lions.
Very much agree with this. If we'd had a large basis of the promotion team and we added a couple of this group, they could've gelled better over time. Jackson is a good example of someone bedding in, and looking to have improved the following season. I'd go so far to say that had we kept just Roberts and Scowen, and yes, maybe matched deals to retain them, we would probably be mid table comfortably, maybe even top half. We haven't passed the baton from one excellent team to the next. The annoying thing for me is that we've had a dreadful season from the back of terrible terrible mistakes and poor decisions. We've been kicked in the gut numerous times losing players, coaches, our owner... and with 3 games left we still aren't relegated. With just one or two better decisions, with appointments, signings, contracts and retentions.... we could've been safe and have a great platform to build next season.
First game of the season Bristol City away They took pity on us and declared at half-time when 3-0 up. It could have been 9. We got an injury time consolation to make the score look respectable but we were well and truly battered. Other than that, I agree. Even the like of Wolves, Fulham and Cardiff didn't thrash us.
The Scowen and especially Roberts parts are the worst of it for me. Didn’t try to keep one and basically forced the other out. The personification of arrogance. We had to rely on two loan players instead of Scowen, neither as good and a combo of three players with virtually no Championship experience plus Angus for central defence
I agree. Whilst we’ve been crap at times - we’ve never really been tonked by anyone and our reasonable goal difference shows this. What’s cost us this season on the actual pitch, is errors from inexperienced players, and not converting our chances. The majority of games we’ve played, our shots on/off target have been decent, just not put then away. I think Jose should be given until Xmas regardless of our league finish. But he’ll need some new players if we stay up. An 8 week summer break will not make our current squad world-beaters. They still be the same but perhaps a little more settled in the area.
I was thinking on a similar theme that the points we’ve dropped . Although we’ve been poor I can honestly say we’ve thrown points away QPR (h) Cardiff( H) hull ( h) Bristol C(h) sheff wed(h) Bolton ( h) Reading ( h) brizzle (h) and possibly Wolves ( a) fine margins involved in all those games . Not sure we’ll get owt tonight but whatever happen the board obviously have a medium to long term plan . Three years from now things may look very different indeed . UTR
Then why was his dad making it clear he was willing to stay around mid season. "Money where your mouth is" or something along those lines wasn't it?
Agree with this 100%. Which kind of gives me hope for next season (albeit probably false hope). Get some experience in key areas of this squad and I think we’ll be okay.
I've said several times before, the team now compared to the last time we went down is far, far better. Looking at the players from back then, there's only Luke Steele who might get a game. People will point to Sunderland and ourselves last time, the difference is they're a complete mess. We need some organisation, but there's no reason we can't turn it around and have a season like Wigan, Blackburn and Rotherham have had. Bradshaw and Moore, Moncur, Isgrove, Lindsay, Pinnock, Jackson, Fryers, Cavare. There's a decent team there. I'd rather we didn't go down, but Millwall, Sheffield United, even ourselves last year, it's proven that a good season in League One can be continued into a good season in the Championship.
Let's be realistic here; we've been way better in previous seasons and been relegated. We're only still in with a shout because there are so many other really, really poor sides down there.
Stick Scowen and Roberts in that side, a coach that's less erratic and can get the most from the players rather than alienating them... Brazil we wouldn't be, but I'm sure we'd be a damn sight more solid.
I agree with the Scowen and Roberts part but where does this come from about alienation of the players?
I agree, Davies was amazing last season with Robbo in front of him. I don't know whether it's his performances or the hive mind mentality of the fans that's took a 180
I've absolutely no idea about the ins and outs of the Scowen situation. I'd have loved to have kept him. As to the facts of the matter all I've seen is of the "he said, she said" variety. Putting your money where your mouth is is a pretty glib statement if you're asking for something well beyond the club's pay structure. Whether that was the case I don't know. I strongly suspect no one else does either. Sorry to break the news but what is posted on twitter doesn't amount to hard evidence.
