Always found it odd that fans back then like derby's had many black lads in their ranks. Bonkers stuff.

I was in the West stand that night and the monkey chants from the Ponte were the worst I have ever heard at any football ground.

Worst I ever heard was in the early days of black players & Bradford City had a lad called Ces Podd , he copped it big time from the ponty , with a chant that started zigga zagga zigga , Bradfords got a so & so , think you can work it out , absolutely shocking , thank goodness that in the the main we do not hear that kind of things these days

I mentioned after the game that my Mrs was sat in the Bolton end for our game with them the other week. She isn't much of a football fan and has only been to about 8 matches in her life, but she couldn't believe how many times she heard Yiadom(in particular) called various racist names. She couldn't believe it, especially when the Bolton team they were supporting contained a good number of Black and mixed race players.

Just goes to show that the racism problem in football is still going strong...

I went to the original match and all the replays and I don't recall any racism. Maybe we were so used to it back then, that it was normal and not noteworthy?

The monkey chants petered out when teams obtained their own black player.
Though by far the most racist fans I remember were Leeds and Chelsea in the 80s.. they'd still use monkey chants and gestures against the opposition black players even when they had 2 or 3 in their own teams.
    Awful fans them cnuts

My dad once told me that someone he worked with was ejected from Oakwell for calling Dean Gorre a "silly black lovely person".

That doesn't read right... meant it odd that supporters back then who had many black lads amongst their support still sought to shout racist abuse at players despite being stood next to coloured supporters of their own team.

I witnessed a Barnsley 'fan' who I worked with hurling abuse at Winston Campbell in a League Cup match at Bramall Lane (we won 3-1 and Glavin scored two). Must have been very early in Winston's career. Last I heard the perpetrator was doing time for continually harassing his ex-wife.

Too many instances home & away. We have more than our fair share of meatheads.
