Statement from Shaw Lane owner

That's right Whitehawk fc tried changing their name a couple of year's back to Brighton city which was rejected. Around this time the FA changed the rules around similar naming of clubs.

They originally wanted to be called Barnsley Town but we blocked that because of the town part despite it not being in our name, not being our nickname and not being used anywhere.

Its out of order to try to block ANY name which includes the word Barnsley. It's a town, not a brand.

AFC Bournemouth and AFC Wimbledon are Bournemouth & Wimbledon to the outside world. AFC Barnsley could well be viewed as the same or with a tangible link to Barnsley FC. Plus he can't use Aquaforce and they don't play anywhere near Shaw Lane so what does he do neat? AFC South Yorkshire?

The way I always look at cases like this, is would the other guy have any issues with another club setting up and using the town name is his team were the long established club in the area? If he has any business sense, then I'm sure he would. I know I would anyway.

 

Should have called his team, South Yorkshire United, done discounts for season ticket holders from all other SY teams, nice black kit with a Yorkshire rose on it, four of the five clubs in Yorkshire have red kits because it’s a labour area start putting blue on kits and you’re on to a hiding to nothing.

On this one wiki is wrong. Whitehawk themselves confirmed they had withdrawn the bid due to supporter feeling.

I seem to remember that it was when the club was in very, very real danger of going under though. If there was more stability about the club, and they had appealed the name change then they would have had to choose another name.

Afc did nothing but destabilise the real Barnsley fc. If I recall the excuse given for setting up the club was that supporters were 'fed up' with the running of the club. If it was set up in case we went under it makes no sense as what could possibly be achieved? A club in the bottom leagues? If we went under one could have been setup for that purpose then. Doing so early u only harmed bfc.
Anyway my point was that it was hypocritical to do this and then cry when someone did the same thing.

Barnsley Town, Barnsley Utd, Barnsley Albion, Barnsley Athletic, Barnsley Ducks, Barnsley Argyle, Barnsley Bulls, Barnsley Tykes, nobody would go to the wrong ground by mistake surely?

I couldn't care less what he calls them, nor the fact he supports Wednesday. Plenty of people on here are Reds but are not born in Tarn, nor live here, their dads took them as youngsters and they got the bug. Can't blame the guy for that.

His comments on twatter he is no doubt regretting, but seems like frustration in BFC's attitude to him and his club

Your right, it is hypocritical. But at the end of the day it was still his(and the club's) right to defend against Shaw Lane taking the towns name, as per F.A. rules. Just like if the original AFC Barnsley had taken root, and the owners of BFC(whomever it may have been) secured the clubs future, AFC would have probably had to give up the name.
