Of course it matters where it comes from , I am clinging to the hope that Hammill is here next season & until I hear from the club that they are not offering him a new deal I will keep my fingers crossed & hope he is resigned
It looked like he was gone other season when Bristol and others were after him , hoping the new owners see that we need adam next season and keep him
We don’t know it’s the clubs choice to let him go if indeed he is to leave. The club may have offered him a deal but he may want to move on. Also as much he has been a massive part of the club for many years over his spells and he has been an amazing servant, he is not worth throwing tonnes of money at to keep. I love Hammill a lot and he has provided some great times for us but he is an aging player and he is not worth giving a big wage to just to keep him around. I certainly would love him to stay with the view of getting him his coaching badges done here too.
Interesting if that's the case. Reading the post, particularly the "powers that be" comment, suggested to me the option was in the favour of the club. Assuming you're correct, and it's in the favour of the player, then it sounds like he's looking for a contract that gives him security beyond the next 12 months (which presumably he's being offered elsewhere given that it says realistically he's likely to leave). However, that changes the situation significantly as far as how I feel about him leaving. If the club weren't taking up their 12 month option on him, then I'd be disappointed with that as it suggests (or at least would be the first tangible signal) that there'll be no significant uplift in financing from the new ownership, compared to the old regime. If, as now seems more likely, he's got the option of a 12 month extension but is choosing to go elsewhere for longer-term security (and fair play to him if so) then it's not something that the club can realistically be expected to compete with. We could offer him a longer term deal, but it would surely have to be on lower wages than the current 12 month option (assuming there's no relegation clause within it) and I suspect we'd then be back in the familiar situation of better offers being available elsewhere compared to our extended contract. Personally, given our situation, I don't think it'd be the right move for us to extend the term of his contract beyond 12 months at the present time.
To me it sounds like the club don't want to pay him the same money he's on now in League 1, (assuming the optional 3rd year would be at the same or higher wages?), he could probably get the same wage we were paying him from a club in the Championship or abroad. Looking at the books they'll see all the other players we have and know we have to get shut of some as the squads too big (especially attacking midfield), taking into account his **** on paper stats from this year they won't offer him the new deal, they won't take into account his experience and importance to the fanbase because they are solely numbers people
Lovely city Perth. Would be very tempting for family I guess. Football in Australia plays very much a fourth place, behind Aussie Rules, rugby & cricket, so he'd be fairly anonymous over there. I hope we can keep him on. If he's interested in coaching we should be looking at a two year deal on a bit less money, but with a role to play with the young players. For me his presence in the dressing room would be key. He should be captain of the club, even if he doesn't start every week, a bit like Bobby did. We've had a lot of chopping & changing & there will be more over the summer, so some continuity would be very handy & he's already done promotion from L1.
Why would the club try to keep him though, I mean it’s not like we have been on a downer and they need some good PR with the fans is it?.........
What winds me up is that everyone keeps banging on about how he's 'ageing'. The bloke only turned 30 in January. He's probably in the prime of his career. I'm sure a few months ago he said he was feeling fitter than he ever has. I can't say as I understand all this coaching role talk either. Why would he want to start coaching at 30? He's still got loads left to give a club. He's a footballer and he loves playing football. If we don't retain him or take up the option on his contract, then I'll be properly, properly baffled. The consensus amongst the fans is they want him to stay. HE and his wife want to stay. He's Barnsley through and through and, for me, he probably will be in the prime of his career. If it's about wages, then I'm sure they could work something out. But then again, if it IS about wages, then I've got to question what the new owners actually want to achieve. I really can't my head around this situation. What we should be talking about is how we are worried he might get poached by another club now we've been relegated. Whereas we are talking about how the club are seemingly pushing one of our prized assets out the door. You really couldn't make it up. Gaulthier (not convinced he reads the BBS), the fans want Hammill to stay. At least give it a go.
He's worth League One wages plus the difference to Championship level wages for his talismanic and motivational qualities both internally and with the fanbase. Having defended the previous regime for having a sensible wage structure due to the fact that PC wasn't mega rich I'd suggest that there's enough scope within the new owners' budget to cover a reasonable offer to Adam. Can't offer him sunshine, sea and barbies though I'm afraid.
Aye but he also said that Angus had an iron deficiency and that he loves Barnsley/hates Leeds so who knows what we can believe from him.
