    ticks a lot of boxes

Was my first choice last time only reservation was no championship experience.

Shrewsbury look a decent outfit, well organised quick on the break and play some nice stuff.

If we're going down the young English up and coming coach... he's the stand out candidate I'd imagine. Didn't he do a great job at Grimsby before Shrewsbury? Plus Shrewsbury are a pretty ordinary side on paper and were tipped to struggle this season. Only the domination of the Lancashire duo have denied them a phenomenal promotion.

Shrewsbury are my second club, and he’s been absolutely fantastic. He’s got some good young talent and he brings out the absolute best in each and every one. It’s a shame Payne was injured for so long. Reckon it would have been closer to automatic if he’d been about all year. Starting on bench today, hope he comes on and nicks the winner.

If they don’t make it up then I’d really like him here. But hope they make it up. Cracking little club and have great memories there. Never thought I would see them in championship, especially after they dropped to conference for a year a while back.

We may think Barnsley is an attractive move for him - but would he? We are not doing too on that score having been shunned by lower div types during the last recruitment drive.

Ipswich aren’t daft. Reckon Ross will end up there.

    We’ve missed the boat.

The more I watch them play the more I’m convinced he’s the man. They are really well set up.

Let’s just hope they lose in the play offs.

No. Want them up for their fans.

If not want Hurst. And he can bring Nolan with him!

When was he injured? He's played a part in 48 games for Shrewsbury this season plus 3 for us.

Getting muddled with last year I think actually.

Just got a good assist. Wish he had stayed. Goal every 160 minutes this year. Reckon he’ll have a blistering year soon.

Hurst was my first choice when Hecky left, think he’ll be out of our reach now though as I can see Shrewsbury winning the play offs. They’re now 2 steps away from the Championship so fair play to em. Always good to see unfashionable ‘small’ clubs like them and Burton do so well, shows there’s still some beauty left in an otherwise now soulless game like football.

I said at the time it was a mistake letting him go so soon, and I stand by that. Release Payne, then pay good money for Kieffer Moore. I like Kieffer and think he'll be a massive asset next year, but that obviously doesn't make any sort of sense whatsoever. It's like giving away my car for free, then buying a virtually identical car to replace it.

Kieffer scored more in half a league one season than Payne did in a full season. Kieffer is a much better player.

Right now, we want to get back to the Championship. He seems to be helping Shrewsbury do that. I have seen absolutely no evidence that he is definitely "not good enough", nor have I seen any that he is worse thatn Kieffer Moore.

Every club releases players because they think they're not good enough / past it etc. Sometimes, the club makes a mistake. Barnsley have done this on a few occasions. Players we released, or sold to clubs lower down the pyramid for small fees include -

    David Speedie - mistake
    Andy Liddle - mistake
Arjan De Zeeuw - Basset's biggest ever mistake
Glynn Hurst - didn't think so at the time, but his goalscoring record suggests this was a mistake
Stefan Payne - in my opinion, this was also probably a mistake

Stefan Payne never got a real chance and was never in the team long enough to make a judgement one way or another
