I had my second best season in following the Reds in the 2015 season where we performed the miracle of being bottom at Christmas, to gaining promotion and winning silverware at Wembley. We were League 1 and I well recall the large away followings, great atmospheres (from xmas onwards anyway) Since then, and before then, I suffered the yearly struggle to stay up, the feeling walking away from Oakwell of yet another defeat with the "social media" outbursts to follow. We had several years struggling in the Championship where the great "success" was escaping the drop on the last day. As far as I'm concerned I don't care what league we're in. I want to see my team win a game and entertain me, send me home happy for a change. So I couldn't care less that we're back in L1 Bring it on
It does matter. As fans normally used to seeing a decent standard of football, in truth, we are better suited to watching Championship football. Having said that, we have to be realistic. Due to poor decision making, the sale of key players and the failure to sign adequate replacements, coupled with the appointment of a Coach who unfortunately proved not to be up to the job, we are in League One and we've just got to get on with it. Looking at our squad, for me, it contains the necessary quality to do well next season. As some have already said, some additional signings in key positions and we should be up there hopefully challenging for the right to return to the Championship.
Funny thing about the away followings, I was at every away game post Christmas and our numbers were pretty cack compared to this season for example. Less than a thousand to places likes Crewe and Port Vale. Not that I gave two shits given we won virtually every game and I'd love it if we did similar this time around. I just want to see us battle and win games after the last 16 months of hell.
Settling for league 1 is half hearted. For every Walsall at home in the play offs is 18/19 home games with 200 away fans and a flat atmosphere. There is nothing to stop us looking above just staying in the league apart from the board (and most fans) willingness to accept mediocrity. Look at the start of last season pretty much every home game had a great atmosphere.
That's the sort of attitude that leads back to playing in the forth division in front of crowds of 2000 like in the days before Allan Clarke I want Barnsley FC to be a Premier League team again but this time do a Burnley and stay there for a while or at least to keep trying to become one settling for stagnation in the lower leagues leads to decay and if you want that try watching the Pikeys.
One of the most memorable matches and atmospheres I've ever seen watching Barnsley. The ground was bouncing from start to finish.
No it isn't! How can you criticise his attitude!? He's just said he's happy to go and watch them whatever league they're in. That's his commitment sorted. It's up to the club to do the rest.
Third division as it used to be was where it started for me in 80/81 and for my lad, then aged 4, in 05/06. Some of my/our greatest memories, Premiership promotion apart, at that level. We dream like everyone else of grander days at a higher level, but reality isn't as bad as it's often made out to be. Lots of clubs endeavour to play at a higher level, only 3 or 4 from each division make it each year. Attacking, winning football is good to watch irrespective of the level we play at. Getting to the Premier League was a glorious achievement, but in my opinion, it was far more fun and exciting getting there than being there.
It's only a stupid post if you choose to ignore the point of it which was to take enjoyment in us having a winning team. I could take you straight to at least 20 stupider posts today alone.
I want to see a winning team, and be part of a fanbase thats picked up on a wave of excitement and enthusiasm. That was my first experience of watching the reds back in division 4. One of our best eras, under Clarke and Hunter was played out in the lower leagues, It's not beneath us. People say "oh the standard of football is crap", but it's only our standard that we need to bother about. If the other teams want to be crap then so be it. Of course I'd like to play as high as possible, but I'll take what comes and celebrate a goal the same regardless of who it's against. It's all about achievable ambitions. We know we can do better in league one than in the championship where we just can't or won't try to compete.
well these days due to my location I very rarely get to Oakwell. But I think the point the OP may be trying to make is that no matter what league we find the Reds in we will still support/follow them. I certainly would. Even if it was the conference or lower. They are still my team since a nipper and always will be. Of course we want them to be as high up the pyramid as possible but the fact remains they are still our team no matter what. https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p006yfj6 watch the full episode , it kinda sums up what being a Tarn fans is ..LOL https://www.bing.com/videos/search?...EBABE4456F2DE501652CEBABE4456F2DE50&FORM=VIRE
