Why would Big Mick come here?

Favourite in most lists for the gaffer's role, but he is an experienced manager at International and Premier League level, and was almost certainly on considerably more at Ipswich than we would offer. There are said to be question marks over half of the managers in the Premier League at the moment, and Mick has said he'd like another crack at that. The signs are (check this with Gally) that our spend this Summer will be no advance on that of the Patrick Cryne regime, so why would Mick come to grub around with us in League One?

(Nobody more delighted than me if he did, mind.)

He wouldn't, some people reckon he would come just because he's from Barnsley or because he played 300 and odd games for us. Absolute rubbish, he wouldn't drop down to league one unless he had to. I reckon he will just bide his time and wait for another opportunity in the championship.

Mick isn't going to get a Premier League job, so his way of getting back there is by getting a team promoted. Of the teams currently in the Championship, I can see Leeds giving him a chance, but I don't know where else he's going to get that opportunity to take a legitimate contender up. Then there's possibly Celtic over the border. While we're in League One, he may wish to consider us as the owners have stated their aim is Premiership football. This is his chance to get on board at an early stage, to make his mark on the project, and to return to a club close to his heart. Our managerial vacancy should be an exciting one for any manager. You've got a club with a young squad, new ownership, and a chance of having a crack at getting us up the league. Or he could manage Reading or Bristol City or another club like those and possibly end up the same way he did at Ipswich, mid-table plodders.

Mick would be my number one choice for manager if I was in charge of recruitment. But that being said I do not think that we will get him. As you pointed out he has managed at international and Premier league level and will have been on a decent wage at Ipswich. Also add into the mix that we seem to like appointing head coaches not Managers which won't suit Mick. I think if we were going for Mick and if Mick wanted to be here then we would have heard something by now as he is out of work and we need a manager still. I would love big Mick back here next season in the dugout but I just don't think it will happen sadly, however until the new manager is announced I can live in hope that Mick could still get it.

I'm not sure the club is as 'close to his heart' as people think it is.

And also, when have our owners stated that their aim is Premier league football?

Totally agree. He's only spoken about because he played for us thirty years ago.

I suppose the easiest way to find out is to actually ask him.

Don't think we would want him anyway. Doesn't fit into our model. Unless we are having a drastic change.

Doesn’t matter which league we’re in, he won’t do it. The club have approached him at least three times in the past and he has politely declined every time. Club and town too close to his heart and won’t risk losing that. Horse’s mouth and that.

Sounds like a lot until you realise that we literally had to buy a whole bloody football team! How many players did we get in over last summer and January? More than most teams have bought in the last five years I’d wager.

To be honest that’s irrelevant, it’s all about net spend, we still lost a hell of a lot more talent than we signed.

Would’ve needed closer to £20m to get like for like replacements for Hourihane, Winnall, Watkins, Scowen, Bree, Morsy etc

You’re right Spuggy, they never said the aim was EPL. They said they wanted us to be a comfortable Championship club and build year on year.

I don’t disagree but last summer we sold Roberts for 3 million quid and spent 6 million. If we are arguing that it would take more investment than that to get out of L1 I don’t think we are living in the real world. I suspect we will get a sizeable windfall for Mawson and roughly speaking spend that.

I’d agree if we spend anything like that this year on a few quality players then we would walk the League. The OP said that Mick won’t come because of a failure to increase spending from last season. He won’t come for other reasons but I’m not sure that will be an issue for any manager.

We have people saying he won't take the job because it's too close to his heart and other people saying it isn't.

From the press conference on 20 December: "This is one of the oldest clubs in England and it has an identity, a culture and we are looking forward to working with the team, the management and the Cryne family, as we try to get to the next level."

That's Chien Lee. You can argue what "next level" means, and maybe a bunch of billionaires bought the club to split 80% of Alfie Mawson's 15% sell-on. Personally I think they know the money is in getting promoted.

I wouldn't go anywhere near him. Emotional appointment which fans wouldn't judge subjectively if things were going wrong. After the way Danny Wilson II and Paul Heckingbottom ended, I wouldn't go anywhere near an ex-player again

No but HE has stated he’d never take it because it was too close to his heart. Turned the greengrocer down at least three times.
