Seen as it's set to be announced tomorrow what does everyone think it should look like? Be interesting to see how many players from the 'less glamorous' clubs gets in.
Couldn’t give less fecks about England. Love barnsley but the greed League has killed any love I have for the national team. Not interested remotely.
First priority is that he has got to start with Vardy and Kane up top. Both terrific finishers, Vardy's pace should be enough to keep defenders honest and might make some space for Kane to work in. Our big weakness is scoring goals, so we have to give ourselves the best chance of that, which means your two best goalscorers. The stats say Sterling should play, but I've not seen him have a good game for England, same with Dele Alli, but I don't know what else we've got to work with. I'd try to go for a 3-4-3/4-4-2, Delph, Stones, Maguire, Walker, with Walker pushing up In midfield on the right wing. Sterling high on the left, Henderson and Drinkwater in the middle, and Alli behind the front two. Standard 4-4-2 without the ball, but get those four key pieces involved when we do. GK: Pope, Butland, Pickford CB: Stones, Maguire, Smalling, Dunk LB: Delph, Ashley Young RB: Walker, Trippier CM: Henderson, Drinkwater, Loftus-Cheek, Dier, Alli Wide: Sterling, Rashford, Sessegnon ST: Kane, Vardy, Lingard That's 22, leaving either Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ryan Bertrand as cover at right WB, so Walker could play CB in a three, or perhaps even Alfie.
If that's the case then why even look at the thread, let alone comment on it? Leave it to the people who are actually interested in England as its not actually a crime.
Glad people like Joe Hart have missed out. It is nice too see a few players picked on form over reputations etc. I would like to see a few of the lesser club players make it in like Tarkowski, Pope and Lascelles/Shelvey. I would also like to see Sessengnon taken from Fulham, he has had a brilliant season for them at the top end of the Championship and seems to be playing without any fear. I would take him for the bench for sure, he is on far better form than some of our wingers like Welbeck and he can play a few positions too Sessegnon.
Just giving my opinion. I didn’t say I’m not interested in other people’s opinion on England. I Enjoy reading the wide spectrum of people’s opinion on this board. Not sure I ever suggested that it was a punishable offence to like England. I used to love watching them play. Back when a player like Gazza was selected. Now I imagine any kind of individual personality has been stamped out by Southgate. Imagine a midfield of Henderson, Dier, Delph. Wow.
We’ve already made a mess of it, instead of sticking with a settled system that got us through the qualifiers we’ve now changed from a back 4 to a 3 for a couple of friendlies & Kyle Walkers been converted to a centre back. We just don’t learn our lessons, changing formation & personnel just before a tournament isn’t how you achieve anything. We need familiarity & players comfortable in the system they’re playing. Apart from Trippier & possibly Rose if he goes how many of our defence are comfortable in a 3-5-2? No one else plays it apart from Chelsea & Cahill’s not likely to go. Best fit is clearly a 4-3-3 / 4-2-3-1. The players are comfortable with it, virtually all of them play it regularly at their clubs. It’s not rocket science. If needs be, drop Alli or Lingard & go 4-3-3 with Milner, Wilshere or Henderson making the extra man in the middle. Pickford Walker Stones Maguire Young Dier Henderson Sterling Alli Lingard Kane Rest of squad - Butland Pope Trippier Delph Jones Wilshere Shelvey Milner (Get him out of retirement) Lallana Vardy Rashford & I’m struggling to think of a 23rd man out wide, possibly Walcott or a Sancho / Lookman type performing well in Germany.
Surely Delph would be included as a left back? Henderson’s been superb this season, consistent performances in the biggest club competition, I didn’t rate him a couple of years back but he’s come on under Klopp
Folk love to tell people how much they hate or how little they care about England football. They'll all be watching when the WC rolls around.
Sums up how I feel too. You only seem to have to play 10 games in the prem and be English and you're talked about as an England player. But in all fairness, when you look at the likes of Argentina, Brazil, Italy and even Germany.... i don't think many of their players would grace teams from the 90s and earlier. Maybe its that tackling has effectively been banned (Platini got his way in a fashion) that teams are so insipid, or maybe money and celebrity has ruined their true love of the game.
The first world cup i missed was South Africa. I genuinely can't remember where the world cup was in 2014. But I know I was away and absolutely didn't miss it at all. I haven't watched an England international for a very long time and maybe watch the first 10-15 mins of match of the day before i get bored with it. Top flight football is an absolute shadow of what it was, even from just a decade ago. Very sad to see.
Wilshere obviously miles better player but it's a team game and you need some guys like livermore to just follow out instructions for 90 minutes
I think the exact opposite about top flight football. Far more entertaining than it was a decade ago, teams are a lot more attack minded, City & Liverpool in particular are brilliant to watch & we have 6 clubs competing for the main trophies when for a long time it was just Man Utd & Arsenal & then Chelsea as well before Rafa joined Liverpool, City got money & Spurs have improved. Agree on England games, friendlies & qualifiers are awful, feel like pre-season friendlies. I still get up for major tournaments though
