If I were a betting man, which I am..

I would be backing Paul Hurst.

I would suggest that the probability is that we are waiting on a manager given the amount of time we have taking now to make the appointment. It is highly unlikely that we are looking to appoint someone who is out of work or at a club without anything to play for. Out of all of the teams in the L1 and L2 play-offs Paul Hurst probably ticks most of the boxes in terms of a young English coach and someone with a winning mentality.

Personally I would be delighted with this appointment as his team looks very well organised and hard-working.

I agree but if Shrewsbury win the play offs then we'll be looking elsewhere. Don't actually think they will tho.....

You never know in football he still might come. Let’s be reyt if he takes Shrewsbury up that’s as far as they’ll get and will be back down within a year or two unfortunately. He might see us as a bigger opportunity if he did get us up he’d have a better chance of progressing with us.

It’s been 17 days for gods sake just over 2 weeks, it’s hardly an age is it.

The point being that if we were appointing someone who was unattached then it’s more likely than not that the deal would have been done.

If this is correct I would hope that we have had some positive indications from him or his rep. We would look silly waiting around all this time for him to then turn us down flat. I’m hoping that the delay is because there are 2 or 3 strong applicants to consider

In the wonderful world of guess-work, I agree with this concept. I really do hope that it is true as well. Great track record and the club would save money on a new track suit, as we already have one with PH on it. Could buy a striker with that. Paul Hurst for me.

Why would it likely to be done, hardly any immediate rush, given players, agents and Managers all disappear until end of June anyway.
Equally it could be that given the result and fallout of employing José they are just being extra diligent and trying to make sure the next appointment is right.

I too would have no issue in Paul Hurst coming, he has done some great work and is an up and coming manager but have a sneaky feeling it could be someone a little left field and unexpected.

If it is him.. or any other manager in the play offs, win or lose wont they then deserve a holiday. After the seasons end
May be waiting a while longer yet..

Suppose they could set him on .. and then take him to the airport to wave him off..

Would like to think we could attract Hurst even if they go up. Maybe he’s indicated as much and just wants to wait till after play off final.

I think it's been quite obvious for at least a week it's him we want. Ganaye said we had a plan in place if we stayed up or went down. The relegation plan included sacking Morais and because it looked clear we'd go down we will hopefully have had a shortlist before the season had even finished. That it's dragging can only be for one reason. Had they lost to Charlton I believe we would have had movement this week.

He's being linked to Sunderland and Ipswich too though so if that's true we will probably need a plan B.

Think the Hurst appointment may be quite a difficult to make, if he is indeed our main target. Relying on Shrews not getting promoted, Ipswich to get Ross (Hurst appears to be 2nd choice there and Lampard now out of the running), and Sunderland to go with Appleton.

Why would Hurst come to Oakwell? We could be swapping divisions with them. Staying put also viable options for him and Ross. Think we may have to readjust our expectations.

Barnsley could be in a lower league next season than Shrewsbury , and not being big headed or Sheffield United esk but we are a bigger club and IF big IF Paul Hirst is on our wanted list that would go along way in our favor.

Really ? If we wanted PH I doubt being loyal to Shrewsbury would come into it . Managers are like players and mostly ambitious whether that be money or on the field success , both would be more appealing by far at Oakwell . I know some folk on here think we’re only a small club but we’re not !

Aye that’s right , revert to type . Typical of the small minded attitude that pervades our fanbase . A bloke states a fact and suddenly he’s gone all Wednesday ffs . Yep that’s how to shut down any debate !

I really don't understand the argument that if Shrewsbury were to win promotion, Hurst would automatically stay at the club rather than come here. The other year, Micky Mellon guided Shrewsbury to promotion to Division 1 and established them there. He then left to take over Tranmere who were not one, but two leagues below them and playing in non league.
Going back many years, Ian Porterfield managed Rotherham United to the Third Division title (just pipping us). A few weeks later, he left to manage Sheffield United, who the same season had gone in the opposite direction and been relegated to the Fourth Division.
I'm not claiming that Hurst will definitely be our next Head Coach, but neither would I claim that Shrewsbury winning promotion will automatically mean there's no chance of him coming here.

From a loyalty point of view you'd hope he stays with Shrewsbury, but his move there from Grimsby looked slightly sideways at first - decent team in League 2 at the time to League 1 strugglers - but presumably he backed himself to do well at the higher level, and got a reasonable pay rise into the bargain. I don't know how much he's on at Shrewsbury, but I'd guess it's in the £75k to £100k range. A nice life, but certainly not enough to never have to worry about money again, especially in a world as insecure as football. We would probably triple his salary. It's a life-changer from his point of view, whatever division we're in. He'd be a fool not to consider it at least.
